Chapter 1
"Are you sure this is the place?"
I asked, looking up at the old mansion.
The building was huge and looked like it had been abandoned for years.
It was surrounded by a tall fence with barbed wire on top of it, and there were no lights on in any of the windows.
I shivered, even though it wasn’t that cold outside.
"Yeah," Alex said, nodding.
"I’m sure."
He glanced over at Mark, who was standing next to me.
"Are you guys ready?"
Mark nodded.
"Let’s do this."
I took a deep breath and followed them through the gate.
"Is this really a good idea?"
I asked.
"This place is really creepy."
He looked back at me.
"We’ve come this far," he said.
"We can’t turn back now."
We all knew what we were getting into when we agreed to come here tonight.
We’d heard the rumors about this place—the stories people told about the mirror that was hidden somewhere inside.
We’d heard about the things that had happened to people who had dared to look into it… and survived.
And now we were here, in front of the very house where it was supposed to be hidden away.
I didn’t know how Alex had gotten his hands on the key to this place, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to know.

Alex turned the key in the lock and pushed open the door.
It creaked loudly as it swung open, revealing a dark hallway beyond.
"Hello?" he called out.
The only response was the sound of his voice echoing through the empty house.
He glanced back at us and then stepped inside, flicking on his flashlight as he did so.
Mark and I followed him, each of us turning on our own flashlights as soon as we entered.
It took a few moments for my eyes to adjust to the darkness, and when they finally did, I looked around curiously.
The entryway was huge—much larger than I would have expected for such an old house—and there was a grand staircase leading up to the second floor.
There didn’t appear to be anyone or anything here aside from us…

"We should split up," Alex said, interrupting my thoughts.
Mark asked, looking at him like he was crazy.
"No way. We stick together."
"I agree with Mark," I said, nodding.
"I don’t think we should go off on our own in a place like this."
Alex sighed and shook his head, but he didn’t argue with us any further.
He pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it, looking down at the map he had drawn on it earlier that day… the one that showed the layout of the mansion based on the information he’d been able to find online.
