Chapter 1
I was in the middle of a heated alchemy battle with Sarah Lin when I received a mysterious magic mushroom in my mailbox.
The message that came with it read: "Eat me."
I had no idea who sent it, but I had a feeling it was Max Ferrell, my best friend and fellow gamer.
He must have found something new in the game and wanted to share it with me.
I clicked on the mushroom and ate it.
The moment I did, my game interface changed.
A new quest popped up on the screen: "Find the hidden alchemy recipe."
"Max, did you send me this mushroom?" I asked him through our private chat window.
"Yeah. Did you eat it?"
"I did. What does it do?"
"It’s a secret. But I’ll give you a hint: look for a hidden quest."
"Got it. Thanks, Max."
"No problem. Let me know if you need any help."
Max logged off after that.
Sarah was still waiting for my reply in the main chat window.
My fingers shook as I tried to collect my thoughts.
Sarah Lin had been my rival for as long as we’d both played Threa, and she was good—better than me on most days.
She’d also been beating me at alchemy for the last two weeks, ever since we’d discovered this new system of bomb-making and potion crafting.
I’d spent all my free time this past week brewing more powerful bombs than her, only to have her come out on top every day because she’d been busy doing the same thing I was—practicing her alchemy skills for hours on end.
I could feel that today’s battle was going to be particularly intense.
My alchemy lab was filled with the smell of herbs and mushrooms burning over a blue flame, giving off an eerie glow that illuminated the rest of the room.
The game’s music had changed from its usual cheerful tune to something more ominous.
A notification flashed across my screen: You’ve got mail!
I ignored it and continued to focus on brewing my bomb.
It was only after the notification flashed up a second time that I gave up and checked my mailbox.
Mostly, I just got spam from the game’s creators or messages from my friends, but this time there was something different: a magic mushroom.
There was no sender information, no message—just one sentence written at the bottom of the screen: Eat me.
I raised an eyebrow.
That was weird… But not unheard of.
Threa was filled with hidden secrets, items that could give you special abilities or even unlock new areas of the land.
If someone had sent me one of these secret treasures, then they’d do so in a way that wouldn’t reveal their true identity.
I hesitated for a moment as I looked at the mushroom, wondering what to do.
Eating an unknown item in the game could have dire consequences.
It could be a simple buff that would give me better stats for a couple of hours, or it could be a curse that would make me lose all my gold and items for a week.
And in the worst-case scenario, it could even kill my character outright.
But… I never back down from a challenge.
I took a deep breath and picked up the mushroom, then clicked on it to consume it.
As soon as I did, my screen went dark for a moment before changing to show something new.
Quest received: Find the hidden alchemy recipe.
Objective: Travel through Threa and uncover the secret of life itself!
