The pain was excruciating.
It started in my head and coursed through my body, making my muscles ache.
I could feel the skin on my skull tightening, as if it was about to split open.
My bones, they hurt the most.
It was like they were being broken and reformed, lengthened and reshaped.
I wanted to scream, but I couldn't force a sound from my closing throat.
My body began to convulse, shaking violently as the pain reached its peak.
Then, it stopped.
I was exhausted and drained.
I couldn't move or think.
All I wanted to do was sleep.
When I finally came to, I was lying in my bed at home.
My head was pounding and my mouth felt dry.
I tried to swallow, but I couldn't produce any saliva.
The clock on my nightstand read 6:00 pm.
It was dark outside, and the room was cold.
As I lay in bed, I felt a strange sensation, like my body was awakening from a deep sleep.
I tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over me, forcing me back onto the pillow.
I closed my eyes and took a few deep breaths, trying to clear my head.
When I opened them again, I noticed the window was open, and a shadowy figure stood just outside, watching me intently.
My heart raced as I squinted into the darkness.
"Who's there?" I croaked, my voice barely above a whisper.
The figure didn't move or respond.
I reached for my phone on the nightstand, but it wasn't there.
Panic surged through me as I realized I was alone and defenseless.
I forced myself to sit up again, fighting the dizziness that threatened to overwhelm me.
"Hello?" I called out louder this time, hoping someone would hear me.
The figure stepped closer to the window, and I could make out more details.
It was a man, tall and broad-shouldered, with a hood obscuring his face.
"Emily," he said softly, his voice deep and unfamiliar.
"Who are you?" I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady despite the fear coursing through me.
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out something small and metallic.
A key.
"I need you to come with me," he said.
"Why should I trust you?"
"You don't have much of a choice," he replied. "They're coming for you."
"Who's coming for me?"
He sighed, clearly frustrated by my questions.
"There's no time to explain. We need to leave now."
I hesitated, glancing around my room for anything that could serve as a weapon.
But there was nothing within reach.
"Please," he urged. "If you stay here, you'll be in danger."
Something in his voice made me believe him.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood up slowly, testing my balance.
The dizziness had subsided enough for me to walk without stumbling.
"Fine," I said reluctantly. "But I'm not going anywhere until you tell me who you are."
He hesitated for a moment before pulling back his hood.
His face was rugged and weathered, with piercing blue eyes that seemed to look right through me.
"My name is Alex," he said simply. "I'm here to protect you."
Before I could ask any more questions, there was a loud crash from downstairs.
Alex's eyes widened in alarm.
