The man attends the party, faints, and wakes up to find zombies attacking the city.
I woke up in the middle of a party, and it took me a moment to remember where I was.
The music was loud and the people were crammed into the apartment.
It was hot and I was standing in a puddle of beer.
It was a good party.
It was a great party.
I looked around and saw my best friend, Sarah Johnson, also known as the “social butterfly” at our office and everywhere else, laughing with some of our coworkers.
She’d dragged me here to celebrate my promotion, even though it didn’t feel like something to celebrate.
I’d just been promoted to run the company’s entire IT department after my boss had died.
It felt more like a punishment than anything else.
The job would be boring as hell, but the salary was too good to turn down, so I’d decided to take it for a year or two until I could find something better.
Sarah insisted that we go to the party before I left town, and it was hard to say no to her.
I loved spending time with her, and she loved being around people, any people, so this party was just as important for her as it was for me.
She did the same thing every time we went out together.
She dragged me into the middle of a crowd of strangers and forced me to socialize all night long.
The only difference tonight was that I knew most of these people.
They were our coworkers from down at the office where we both worked, and they were all here to celebrate with us, which was cool.
I just wished we could have waited until tomorrow night when we actually had something to celebrate.
I looked over at Sarah, who was still laughing with some of our other coworkers, sipping on a beer and dancing a little bit to the music that was blaring out of the speakers in the corner.
She had short blonde hair and big blue eyes that made her look like an adorable little kid, even though she was in her mid-twenties.
I loved her more than any friend I’d ever had before, but sometimes she drove me crazy because she never listened to anyone else’s opinion, especially mine, which is why she didn’t care that I thought it was too soon to go out and celebrate.
She’d wanted to come, so we were here, and we were going to have a good time whether I liked it or not.
I watched her for a moment and tried to tell myself that it was worth it.
It was worth it to see her having so much fun and to know that she was happy.
It was worth it for me to get out and blow off some steam after a long week at work.
It would be fun.
It would be fine.
I knew that somehow things were going to be okay.
I just wasn’t sure how.
I took a deep breath and looked around the room again.
I realized that we weren’t the only ones who had shown up to the party.
There were dozens of people there already, and they all seemed to be having the time of their lives.
I felt my stomach start to churn at the thought of being surrounded by so many people, but I tried to push the feeling out of my mind.
I wasn’t going to let it ruin my night.
I took another deep breath and reminded myself that I was here with my best friend.
She wouldn’t let anything bad happen to me.
