I pull up to Sarah’s house and park on the curb.
Her parents are out of town, so she’s throwing a party.
It’s a tradition for us—every time her parents leave for the weekend, we throw a party at her house.
I grab the case of beer out of my backseat and head toward the door.
I knock and wait, thinking about how long today has felt.
I woke up early to go hunting with my dad and a few of his friends from work.
Then I joined the football team for open gym.
We worked out for three hours, and I’m sore as hell now.
Football season is four months away, but we start working out right after school ends to make sure we’re all in shape.
There are three weeks left of school, and I can barely wait.
I’m ready for summer break, which means more time for me to hang out with my friends, girl watching by the pool, and no homework.
The door swings open, and I’m greeted by loud music and a group of people already drunk off their asses.
“John!” Sarah yells, and gives me a quick hug before leading me inside.
Her house is huge, so I can’t hear much outside on the porch, but once I step inside, the noise from the whole party fills my ears.
“Where is everyone?”
I ask, looking around.
Sarah shrugs and throws her hands up in the air.
“They’re either in the backyard or downstairs.” She smiles at me.
“Hey, thanks for bringing the beer.”
“Yeah.” She grabs a bottle of water from a cooler sitting next to the wall and takes a big swig.
“Every time.” She rolls her eyes at me and shakes her head.
I can’t help but notice how quiet it is in her neighborhood.
I didn’t see any cars driving past when I pulled up, and it’s usually pretty busy around here at this time on a Saturday night.
Sarah leads me through the house until we get to the living room where everyone is dancing.
“Hey, where did you park?”
She glances over her shoulder at me.
I shrug, not really sure.
Her house is on a corner lot, so I just pulled up to the first open spot I found.
“Okay, well if you need to leave early, you might want to park in the backyard.
We don’t want any of your friends getting blocked in.”
I nod and smile at her.
Hey! You made it!”
Alex yells as he shoves through the crowd and slaps me on the back.
Sarah rolls her eyes.
“Yeah, he’s here.
But he brought beer, so all is forgiven.”
Alex grins at me and clinks his beer bottle against mine before taking a big swig.
“Let me grab you some beer pong partners!”
He stumbles off toward the kitchen looking for more people to join him.
Sarah laughs as she watches him walk away.
“Seriously though,” she says, “you got here early. You’re usually one of the last people here.”
“I don’t know,” I say with a shrug.
I wanted to get out of the house.”
Sarah shakes her head.
