It all started during school orientation.
That was the first time I laid my eyes on S, and my life would never be the same.
I remember the first time I saw him.
I had flown all the way from Mexico to a graduate school in the United States to start a new chapter in my life.
I was so excited about starting graduate school and getting my Master’s degree in Information Systems, one of the top programs in the country.
I was so busy going through a bunch of presentations and figuring out my class schedule that I didn’t even notice at first how he was looking back at me.
I’m not normally the kind of person who gets obsessed with someone just because they’re hot.
But something about him made me instantly crush on him.
He was tall, with blue eyes and beautiful red hair.
He was wearing a T-shirt from one of my favorite bands, Modest Mouse, and that’s what really caught my attention.
I remember thinking, “Wow, this guy has a great taste in music.”
After that, I kept trying to get a better look at him.
I wondered why he was looking back at me and whether he noticed how many times I looked back at him too.
I worried that he may have thought that I was staring at him, but I wasn’t really trying to stare.
It’s just that he was sitting right next to where all the professors and orientation speakers were standing.
So every time I wanted to look at them, he was right there in front of me.
All these thoughts went through my mind, but truthfully, I did want to stare at him too.
He was so tall and handsome, with his red hair that made him look like such a unique and interesting person.
Unfortunately, after this one-time encounter at orientation, I never saw him again.
At least until one day, years later.
We were both at a party hosted by mutual friends from the same university we both went to.
I didn’t recognize him at first because he had dyed his red hair black.
But he still had the same blue eyes and handsome face I remembered from graduate school orientation, which made me realize who he was.
At first, I tried not to act as if I knew him.
After all, we were both there to have fun and make new friends, trying to forget about our stressful day jobs for a little bit.
But later on that night, he came over to say hi to me and my friends.
Not wanting to be rude, I introduced myself and tried to act as normal as possible.
But after we started talking for a few minutes, I realized that S wasn’t like anyone else I had ever met before.
He was so kind and caring, always making sure everyone around him felt included and heard.
