I’m a data scientist, which means my job is to make sense of vast amounts of data.
I take this data from a variety of sources and analyze it, then use it to make predictions or generate insights.
This might sound dull to you, but I love it.
I’m just finishing my first year in the job, and I know I’m good at it.
But I’m not living in the best city for my career.
I’ll need to move to progress, but right now I can’t afford it.
So instead I spend my days working and improving, and my evenings studying and praying.
I have a routine that works for me, and I’m fine.
I could be fine for quite some time yet.
So the offer that came through yesterday was a surprise, to say the least.
It wasn’t a big company, but they were offering me a huge promotion and a very generous salary.
I’d be stupid to turn it down.
But they were also offering me a job in another country.
A long way away.
At first, I laughed.
I’d assumed they were offering me a new job at their main office in London or New York or something.
I could have managed that.
But no, it was much further than that.
In fact, they were offering me a job on the other side of the world.
A job in California.
It was an incredible opportunity, but I wasn’t sure what to do about it.
I was going to have to talk to my parents before I made any decisions.
That wouldn’t be easy, but I was sure they’d support me if I explained everything to them.
They’d always been there for me, even when we didn’t agree on everything.
I wasn’t looking forward to the conversation, but I was sure it would be fine in the end.
My phone buzzed and I picked up my handset from my desk to check who was calling.
It was my boss, so I answered right away.
“Yes Naveed,” I said cheerfully.
“What can I do for you today?”
What did he want?
I was pretty confident that he didn’t have any big projects coming through at the moment, so there shouldn’t be any issues that needed sorting straight away.
I’m sorry Aisha, but this is your last day working for us.”
I didn’t say anything, just sat there in shock, staring into space with my mouth hanging open, unable to believe what my boss had just said to me on the phone.
