The computer screen flickered, and I moved the mouse slightly to wake it up.
The graphs on the screen popped up, showing the results of the algorithm I’d been building for the past few days.
The machine was ready to make some predictions.
I clapped my hands and turned around in my seat to celebrate with Alex, but he was already blocking my view.
“Hey, don’t block the sun!”
He moved aside, and I stared out of the window, seeing the clouds reflected on his glasses.
Dark clouds were rolling in, covering the sun and giving the office a gloomy feeling.
Alex put a hand on my shoulder.
“We’re going to die here.”
I laughed and pushed his hand away.
“Oh, stop.
“Sorry,” he said, “but we’re in a basement.
If the building catches on fire, we won’t even know until it’s too late.”
I laughed again and turned back to the screen.
This was typical Alex humor.
He was always saying things to get a rise out of me, but that was part of what made him such a good friend.
I looked at my best friend and resisted the urge to ruffle his curly hair.
He looked tired—bags under his eyes, hair a little disheveled, and glasses sliding down his nose.
But even with his worn-out appearance, he still had that same goofy grin on his face, like he was about to crack another joke that only he thought was funny.
We’d been friends for five years now, ever since we both started our careers at this tech company in Elmbrook.
I was a data scientist and he was a software engineer, and we made a pretty good team.
It wasn’t always easy being a Latina woman in such a white, male-dominated industry, but I’d learned how to make it work for me.
My heritage wasn’t something I wanted to hide or be ashamed of; it was something that made me unique, and it was part of what made me good at my job.
As a data scientist, I analyzed patterns all day long—and I’d been good at spotting them ever since I was young.
Growing up with a big Mexican family taught me to see things that others didn’t, and it gave me an edge when it came to solving problems no one else could figure out.
I was lucky to be able to do what I loved, even if it meant working remotely for different clients and spending most of my days alone in my office with Alex as my only source of human interaction.
I didn’t mind—I was a bit of an introvert anyway, and I liked being able to concentrate on my work without being distracted by office gossip or water cooler talk.
But I couldn’t help feeling a little envious of Alex sometimes, with his big group of coworkers and his reputation as the office funnyman.
When I finally got over the jealousy and turned back to my computer screen, I saw that the results had come back from the algorithm I’d been working on all week.
And they were good—really good.
I smiled to myself and made a few quick changes to the code before turning to Alex again.
He was staring out of the window, probably thinking about his next joke.
“Hey,” I said, “do you want to see something cool?”
He turned around and grinned at me, his glasses sliding halfway down his nose.
