“Wake up, my lord!”
Royal Betrayal
I awoke to the sound of clattering armor.
Royal Betrayal
I rubbed my eyes and squinted through the darkness.

“Who goes there?”
Royal Betrayal
I called out, my voice still thick with sleep.
Royal Betrayal
The figure at the door stepped into the light streaming from the torches in the hallway, and I let out a sigh of relief.

“My apologies, my lord, but I bring urgent news.” My servant, Jacob, bowed low before me.

I nodded for him to continue.
“The guard at the watchtower informed me that he overheard a group of men conspiring against our kingdom.”
“Who are these men?
And what do they plan to do?”
“They have not said, my lord, but they spoke of seeking an audience with His Majesty the king tomorrow morning to present him with their demands.”
I jumped out of bed and reached for my trousers.
“Very well, Jacob.
You may go back to your quarters.
You are dismissed.”
Jacob hesitated before nodding and bowing again before he left, closing the door behind him.
I quickly dressed in the dim light of the torches before strapping on my sword and rushing down to my father’s chambers.
The palace was unnervingly quiet – too quiet for a bustling castle that rarely slept.
Even at this late hour, there should have been noise from the kitchens or from the guards patrolling the halls.
As I neared my father’s chambers, I could still hear the muffled sounds of swords clashing in the courtyard below.
My heart sank as I took in the scene.
Even in shadow, the red blood stained his white robes, and I knew at once that he was gone.
I knelt before him and pressed a kiss to his icy hand before rising to take up my sword once more.
There was no time for grief.
It was an hour past midnight, and my father lay dead in his bed, his body too weak to fend off the illness that had taken over his body.
But the war outside these walls still raged on, and our enemies were knocking at the gates.
I took a deep breath to steady myself before stepping out into the night.
The flickering torches along the walls cast long shadows across the courtyard as I made my way down the stairs.
The clamor of swords grew louder with each step, and I could hear the sounds of horses whinnying and men shouting in the distance.
My heart hammered in my chest, but I tried to focus on the teachings of my mother – to be brave in the face of danger, to be kind to those who need help, and to serve my kingdom with honor.
She had told me stories of our ancestors who had fought bravely in battles to protect our realm, and their strength gave me courage.
