I couldnāt believe he had just walked out on me.
We were supposed to be getting married in a week.
I had spent the past two years of my life planning this wedding, and now all of that was going down the drain.
I thought Iād finally met the one, and for a while, I actually believed he loved me.
But it was all an act.
He never loved me.
He never even liked me.
I had been nothing more than a pawn in his game, and heād just decided to throw me away.
Just like that.
āYou should be happy, Cora,ā heād said as heād packed his stuff and walked out of our apartment and my life forever.
āYouāre free from me now.
My family wonāt have to suffer because of your bad luck anymore.
So you should be jumping for joy.ā
I was too stunned to say anything, to tell him that I had always been right there for him, to tell him that I would always be there for him, no matter what.
But he didnāt want me to speak.
He didnāt want to listen.
After all, I was the jinxed one.
As soon as he left, I broke down in tears, my heart shattering into a million pieces as it sank lower and lower into my chest.
I didnāt know how long I cried for, but when the tears finally stopped falling, it hit me that the man I loved more than life itself had just left me for good.
And I would never see him again.
I had no choice but to face reality; it was time to move on with my life.
So I did what any normal girl who just got dumped by her fiancƩ would do: I went to a bar to drink away my sorrows.
After a few drinks and enough tears to fill an ocean, I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to see a tall, gorgeous man standing over me with dark hair and even darker eyes.
āHello,ā he said with a smile that made my stomach flutter for the first time since Ethan had left me.
He pointed at his drink.
āMind if I sit?ā
I pulled myself together and sat up straighter.
āNo,ā I said softly, trying not to show how weak I really was.
āI donāt mind.ā
He sat next to me at the bar and motioned for the bartender to come over before turning his attention back to me.
āHavenāt seen you here before,ā he said with a smile that made me want to melt into a puddle at his feet.
āIāve only been here a few minutes.ā Thatās all it took for you to walk up and talk to me?
Lucky me.ā
The bartender brought him his drink, and he took a sip before turning his attention back to me.
āWhy are you drinking by yourself?ā
āI guess Iām not,ā I said with a smile as I glanced at the drink in front of me.
āWhy did you buy me this?ā
āBecause I wanted to see you smile.ā He motioned toward the drink again.
