I couldn’t believe he had just walked out on me.
We were supposed to be getting married in a week.
I had spent the past two years of my life planning this wedding, and now all of that was going down the drain.
I thought I’d finally met the one, and for a while, I actually believed he loved me.
But it was all an act.
He never loved me.
He never even liked me.
I had been nothing more than a pawn in his game, and he’d just decided to throw me away.
Just like that.
ā€œYou should be happy, Cora,ā€ he’d said as he’d packed his stuff and walked out of our apartment and my life forever.
ā€œYou’re free from me now.
My family won’t have to suffer because of your bad luck anymore.
So you should be jumping for joy.ā€
I was too stunned to say anything, to tell him that I had always been right there for him, to tell him that I would always be there for him, no matter what.
But he didn’t want me to speak.
He didn’t want to listen.
After all, I was the jinxed one.
As soon as he left, I broke down in tears, my heart shattering into a million pieces as it sank lower and lower into my chest.
I didn’t know how long I cried for, but when the tears finally stopped falling, it hit me that the man I loved more than life itself had just left me for good.
And I would never see him again.
I had no choice but to face reality; it was time to move on with my life.
So I did what any normal girl who just got dumped by her fiancƩ would do: I went to a bar to drink away my sorrows.
After a few drinks and enough tears to fill an ocean, I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to see a tall, gorgeous man standing over me with dark hair and even darker eyes.
ā€œHello,ā€ he said with a smile that made my stomach flutter for the first time since Ethan had left me.
He pointed at his drink.
ā€œMind if I sit?ā€
I pulled myself together and sat up straighter.
ā€œNo,ā€ I said softly, trying not to show how weak I really was.
ā€œI don’t mind.ā€
He sat next to me at the bar and motioned for the bartender to come over before turning his attention back to me.
ā€œHaven’t seen you here before,ā€ he said with a smile that made me want to melt into a puddle at his feet.
ā€œI’ve only been here a few minutes.ā€ That’s all it took for you to walk up and talk to me?
Lucky me.ā€
The bartender brought him his drink, and he took a sip before turning his attention back to me.
ā€œWhy are you drinking by yourself?ā€
ā€œI guess I’m not,ā€ I said with a smile as I glanced at the drink in front of me.
ā€œWhy did you buy me this?ā€
ā€œBecause I wanted to see you smile.ā€ He motioned toward the drink again.
