Emma Thompson was not a woman who was easily daunted.
In her thirty-four years, she had climbed the world's highest peaks, dived to the deepest point on Earth, and explored some of the most remote caves known to man.
She had held her ground when faced with avalanches, hurricanes, and even the occasional hungry bear.
So it was no surprise that as she stood on the edge of the massive drilling site in the heart of Greenland, preparing to kick off what was perhaps her most audacious venture yet, she was feeling not fear but exhilaration.
The wind was howling around her—Greenland would never win a beauty contest—but she could see the stars above and feel the icy cold of nature’s touch on her cheeks.
The platform at her feet was a vast mechanical spider, its legs stretched out over the ice.
A little way from where she stood, she could see Alex Johnson fiddling with some equipment; he was a little taller than Emma, and his blue eyes looked down as he worked, his movements precise and logical.
David Lee, the physicist, was next to him, looking over his glasses as he peered at the screen of his tablet.
He had messy hair and rarely got enough sleep; Emma wasn't entirely sure if that was because he worked too much or because he was trying to make some kind of physicist statement about being above such things as personal hygiene.
“Everything's ready,” Alex said, looking up at Emma.
Emma nodded and gave him a smile.
As an engineer, Alex was always a little suspicious about her geologist's ability to organize things properly; Alex didn’t like going off plan.
But then again, Emma loved nothing more than throwing plans out the window… and yet still getting things done.
That was probably why she and Alex worked so well together—and maybe why they often drove each other nuts.
With a confidence that came from years of experience—and maybe just a tiny bit of recklessness—Emma gave her equipment one final check before putting it on.
The suit was big and bulky and encased her whole body.
The helmet had a thick visor that obscured most of her face; in what little Emma could see reflected in the visor’s surface, she looked like an alien from a bad 1950s movie.
She pulled on heavy gloves that made her hands feel like claws.
The suit was designed to protect her against anything she might encounter beneath the surface.
It was more than just a pressure suit; it had its own environmental control system, capable of keeping her comfortable no matter what the conditions were.
And it was tough.
The helmet had a titanium shell, and the rest of the suit was made of layers of graphene and ceramic fabric.
It could survive temperatures that would melt steel, and it was so strong that a bullet couldn't pierce it.
It was also so expensive that if she damaged it, she would probably have to take out a second mortgage to pay for it.
But then again, with what they were planning to do, there were worse costs.
Once she had all her gear on, Emma took a deep breath and started to walk toward the platform.
The sky was just beginning to lighten, and she could see her breath hanging in front of her face.
The wind wasn't quite as bad now as it had been when she'd arrived at site, but it was still cold enough to make her skin prickle.
“Good luck down there,” one of the engineers called out as she reached the platform.
