I was dead asleep when my phone rang.
It took me a few seconds to even realize what the sound was, so deep was my sleep.
I fumbled for the device on the bedside table, squinting at the screen.
Sunshine was already streaming through the curtains, but that didn’t mean much.
It was Gotham City, and in Gotham time was only a reference point.
If someone was calling me at this hour, it wasn’t to have a nice chat.
It could only mean that Damian Wayne had gotten himself into another mess and needed my help to get out of it.
I had half a mind to let the thing ring out, but I’d been his unofficial life coach for too many years now.
I knew better than to ignore calls from him.
I answered with a groan.
“It’s ten in the morning,” I said without preamble.
“What the hell is so important that you have to call me at an ungodly hour like this?”
“Are you still in bed?”
Damian asked, sounding appalled.
“Get up, Todd!We have a situation.”
My sleep-addled brain barely registered the urgency in his tone.
“What is it?”
I asked, rubbing my face with one hand and sitting up on the bed with the other.
“Why do you sound like you’re about to collapse?”
“Because I was sleeping and you woke me up!”
I said, not bothering to hide my annoyance this time.
“You know, normal people are allowed to sleep at night without worrying that they’ll miss out on saving Gotham from whatever new villain-of-the-week you’ve let loose on the city!”
“I haven’t let anyone loose on anything,” he said through gritted teeth.
“It’s…it’s something else.”
Damian was never this cryptic unless he had a good reason to be—and there weren’t many of those.
It was the surest sign that I should take his request seriously, no matter how tired I was or how much I wanted to go back to bed.
“What is it?”
“You’ll see when you get here,” he said.
“Is Superboy with you?”
I blinked, struggling to follow his train of thought.
“Uh…no,” I said.
“Get him and meet me in the cave.”
“What?”
I sputtered, my brain still not firing on all cylinders.
“Why do you want me to get Superboy?”
“I don’t want you to get him,” he said.
“But if he’s already there I want him with you.”
“Well, he’s not.”
“Then get him and come see me at the manor.”
I snorted derisively.
You’re not seriously suggesting I drag his ass out of bed for whatever situation you’ve gotten yourself into, are you?
Get Alfred to help you and I’ll see you later.”
“I tried,” Damian said.
“He wouldn’t wake up.”
“Are you sure you’re not dreaming?”
“I’m not,” he said through gritted teeth.
“Now get your ass out of bed and come over here.
I could hear the sound of him tapping away on his keyboard in the background.
He was probably pretending he wasn’t talking to me.
Trust me, Todd,” he continued.
Jason receives a panicked call from Damian, who asks
“This isn’t something that can wait.
I narrowed my eyes at the phone.
The situation was obviously more serious than I’d thought if Damian was calling me rather than dealing with it himself.
“What’s going on?”
I demanded, wondering why he was being so vague.
This was way more cloak-and-dagger than his usual M.O., which was usually all about charging in head-first and asking questions later.
And why couldn’t he just tell me over the phone?
He hesitated for a moment before saying, “It’s…it’s complicated.”
“Uh-huh,” I said.
“Try me, Robin.”
“It’s nothing we should discuss over the phone,” he said stiffly.
I could practically hear the scowl on his face.
“You know that as well as I do.”
Whatever it was, it was obviously something bad if it had him this rattled.
I sighed heavily.
“You’re sure it can’t wait until later?”
I pressed, already calculating how long it would take to drag Superboy out of bed and get him over here.
I waited for him to say that it was fine, that it could wait until I got Superboy over here, but instead he cleared his throat awkwardly and said, “There’s no time, Todd.”
I frowned at the phone, my heart starting to race a little faster.
There were sirens wailing in the background now, and that didn’t help matters any.
“Are you in danger?”
I asked, already getting up and pulling on some clothes, just in case he needed backup, even though he’d said he hadn’t wanted it.
“No,” he said quickly, almost too quickly.
I narrowed my eyes at the phone, trying to decide whether or not he was lying to me—although with Damian, that was never as easy as it seemed.
Why don’t you come over and we’ll discuss this further,” he said, obviously trying to change the subject.
I hesitated for a second before asking, “Did you hurt someone?”
“No,” he said.
“It’s been taken care of.”
I snarled, my anger getting the better of me.
“Jesus fucking Christ, Damian!
Just tell me what the hell is going on!
I’m on my way over there now and if you’re not there when I arrive…”
“Don’t threaten me,” he said stiffly.
“I don’t respond well to threats.”
“Then tell me what’s going on!”
I yelled into the phone.
There was a heavy pause.
“Just get here,” he said eventually.
I could hear the tension in his voice.
“We’ll talk about it then.”
He hung up before I could say anything else.
I stared at the phone in my hand for a long moment before slipping it back into my pocket and stomping over to the window.
Well, that was just great.
I had no idea what the hell was going on and he was being annoyingly tight-lipped about it.
