The first time I saw the alien spacecraft, I was sure that I was going to die.
The second time, it all came back to me.
The Earth was dying.
Our planet was now no more than a shell of its former self.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to fight back the tears that threatened to fall.
We were on our way to find a new planet for humans to live on, and it was up to us to succeed.
It was up to us to save the world.
My name is Alex Johnson, and I am the mission commander.
I am an astronaut, and I am a pioneer.
But most importantly, I am a human.
I am the last hope for my species.
Behind me stood Dr.
Sarah Thompson, who was doing some final checks on the equipment that she had so meticulously prepared for this mission.
We had been friends ever since we were assigned to work together, and she was like a sister to me.
She was a brilliant scientist who had made a name for herself in her field at a very young age.
Her short stature and glasses made her look harmless, but she had a very logical mind and would stop at nothing to get what she wanted.
Next to her stood Mark Rodriguez, a rookie astronaut who was lucky enough to be assigned with us.
I had watched him closely during his training, and he reminded me of myself when I was younger: impulsive, brave, and very loyal.
He wore his hair short, and his body was very muscular from all of the training that he had been through.
He also sported a beard, which made him look much older than he actually was.
He puffed out his chest as he stood next to Sarah, looking at her as if she were some sort of goddess.
She did not seem to notice him at all, which made him scowl at her in frustration.
She did not like it when we did not stick to our duties, and she would frequently remind us of this fact with a stern look on her face.
“Is everything ready?”
I asked as I turned around to face them.
They both nodded at the same time, and I smiled faintly at them in return before heading towards the spacecraft.
I climbed the stairs and entered the craft, sitting down in the captain’s seat.
I placed my hands on the controls and looked out through the window, taking one last look at the place that I had called home.
The sun was setting on the horizon, casting an orange and pink hue over everything that it touched.
The view was so beautiful that it almost brought tears to my eyes, and I closed them for a moment, trying to fight back the wave of emotion that threatened to overcome me.
When I opened them again, I turned on the intercom and spoke into it in a clear voice.
“All systems check.”
“Roger that.” came Sarah’s voice from inside the spacecraft.
I heard her typing away on the computer, making sure that everything was in working order to send us off.
I looked over to my left and saw Mark doing the same thing.
He gave me a thumbs up when he saw me watching him, and I returned it with a smile.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I waited for their confirmation.
I knew that they were just as nervous as I was, but I also knew that they would not let me down.
