I sit in my cozy home studio with my guitar, strumming away.
It isn’t the best guitar I have, but it’s the one that brings me the most comfort.
I’ve written some of my most iconic songs on it, and I want to feel its strings under my fingertips as I write what I hope is another hit.
It doesn’t take long for me to get lost in the music, and I allow the lyrics to pour out of me.
I know they’re good.
I can feel it in my bones.
But what good will it be if no one else gets to hear them?
I can’t focus, knowing that TikTok might be gone soon.
The thought has been plaguing me since I first read about it online.
Sure, there are other platforms, but TikTok has a special place in my heart.
I’ve been able to reach an entirely new generation of fans on there.
People who would have never listened to my music if they hadn’t stumbled upon me on their “for you” pages.
It’s not just a promotional tool for me—it’s a way to meet people I wouldn’t have met otherwise.
Being an artist is already so isolating.
You spend so much of your time working alone.
There are very few people you can talk to about what you’re going through.
But TikTok has made it so I can communicate with my fans.
I can share my art with them and get instant feedback.
They don’t know how much that means to me, but I do.
And now, it might be taken away from me.
I’m probably overreacting, but it doesn’t feel like it right now.
Sighing loudly, I sit my guitar down and pull out my phone.
As much as I hate it, I need to talk to someone about this.
I know who that person is going to be even before I open my contacts list.
Unsurprisingly, she answers on the first ring, and I’m grateful that she picked up so quickly.
“Emma,” I say quietly.
Her face is concerned.
“What’s wrong?”
I shake my head and take a deep breath before continuing.
“So, have you heard about what’s happening with TikTok?”
I ask her softly, not wanting to let the emotion in my voice get the best of me.
“I have,” she says with a heavy sigh.
“I know it’s going to suck for you if it gets banned.”
“It’s not just about that,” I tell her quietly.
She looks at me curiously, so I elaborate.
“I can’t just talk to people on other platforms the way I can on there,” I explain to her as best I can.
“It’s different when I post on Instagram or Twitter or wherever else.”
“But you’ll still be able to reach people,” she tells me gently, trying to make me feel better.
“I’ll lose touch with so many people,” I say with a shake of my head.
“There are a lot of young kids who are on TikTok that I wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise,” I tell her truthfully as a heavy weight settles in the pit of my stomach.
