Chapter One
Prologue
Two Years Ago
Tony Stark had been dead for three months.
Pepper Potts still had trouble believing it. He'd been so full of life, so vibrant, it was hard to imagine a world without him in it. She'd spent the vast majority of her adult life by his side, as his friend, as his lover, as his partner, and the void he left behind was almost too much to bear.
She missed his smile, his wit, the way he could always make her laugh. She missed his intelligence, his brilliance, the way he could solve any problem with just a few strokes on a computer keyboard. And she missed his heroism, the way he'd always put himself in harm's way to save others, no matter what the cost. Tony Stark had been many things during his life: genius inventor, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. But at the end of the day, he'd been a hero.
She missed that most of all.
She knew she wasn't the only one who felt that way. The entire world was grieving for Tony, mourning the loss of their greatest champion in this new age of heroes. And many people blamed themselves for his death.
It hadn't been their fault. Tony had made the choice to save the world and no one could have stopped him. It had been his destiny, his purpose, but that didn't make it any easier to accept. At least, not for Pepper.
She'd done everything she could to keep Tony alive. She'd tried to be there for him, to support him in whatever way he needed, but it hadn't been enough. She'd failed him and now she was paying the price.
Her eyes fell on the newscast playing on a monitor across the room. A reporter was talking about a new threat that had emerged in New York City. A giant robot was rampaging through the streets and the Avengers were nowhere to be found.
The public was growing more and more restless every day. They needed heroes they could believe in and with Tony gone, things were starting to fall apart. They needed Iron Man but they were stuck with Ironheart and everyone knew it.
Riri Williams was doing her best but she wasn't Tony Stark and everyone knew it. She wasn't nearly as experienced or as skilled as her predecessor and no one expected her to be. Riri was a genius, no doubt about it, but she was still a teenager and she had a lot to learn.
She needed someone to guide her, to mentor her, but she didn't have that anymore and it showed. Riri was doing her best to fill Tony's shoes but no one could replace him. He'd been one of a kind and no one could match him.
But maybe someone could bring him back
Pepper's heart skipped a beat and her eyes widened as an idea occurred to her. A crazy, dangerous idea that could get her killed or worse but it might also bring Tony back from the dead.
It was a long shot but it was the only shot she had and she wasn't about to let it pass her by.
"FRIDAY," she said, her voice trembling with excitement and fear.
"Yes, Ms. Potts?" her AI asked.
"Show me all of Tony's projects from the past five years," she said.
"Are you sure?" FRIDAY asked.
Pepper hesitated for a moment but then nodded. "Yes," she said. "I'm sure."
"Very well," FRIDAY said and the lights in the lab dimmed as images appeared on the screens around her.
pepper opens her legs and starts imagining Tony fucks her up.
Pepper sat down in the chair behind her desk and tried to get her thoughts in order. Tony had left a lot of projects in various stages of completion when he died and they were all still here, waiting for someone to come along and finish them. Most of them were related to weapons manufacturing and had been intended for commercial use but there were a few that seemed to be more personal in nature. She'd never paid much attention to them before but now she was glad she hadn't.
If she had, she might not have found what she was looking for.
One project in particular caught her eye, a project that was so secret even she hadn't known about it. It was a prototype for a device that could supposedly bring the dead back to life. It sounded like something out of a science fiction novel and Pepper was almost certain it wouldn't work but Tony had been a genius and he'd always been ahead of his time. He'd done things no one else could do and he'd done them with style. If anyone could bring the dead back to life, it would be him.
Tony, fuck me, please.
The prototype had been designed specifically for him, or rather, for his brain. The rest of his body would have to be rebuilt from scratch but as long as his brain was intact, it should technically still be possible to bring him back. Assuming the prototype worked as advertised, which was a big if.
Pepper's heart pounded in her chest as she scanned through the list, hoping against hope that she'd find what she was looking for.
As she reached the bottom of the list, she realized that it wasn't there.
She frowned and scrolled back up, thinking she must have missed it.
But no, it really wasn't there.
How could that be?
She thought for sure it had to be one of Tony's most ambitious projects, even by his standards.
FRIDAY, please run a deep scan of all my systems and files, she said.
I need to find a specific project that I believe Tony developed in secret.
Understood, Ms.
Potts, FRIDAY replied.
I will begin immediately.
As Pepper waited for FRIDAY to finish the scan, she wracked her brains trying to remember where she might have put the device or if Tony had ever told her about it.
It only took a few minutes for FRIDAY to complete the scan but those minutes felt like an eternity to Pepper.
When it was finally over, she held her breath as she looked through the results.
There were a few new projects that had been flagged as being of unknown origin and they were all listed as being of extreme secrecy but none of them seemed like they would be the one she was looking for.
Where could it be?
she wondered.
Why hadn't it shown up in the scan?
I'm sorry, Ms.
Potts, FRIDAY said, but I couldn't find any trace of the device you're looking for.
Are you sure Tony ever actually built it?
Pepper sighed and nodded.
Yeah, I'm sure, she said.
I saw it with my own eyes.
FRIDAY hesitated for a moment before speaking again.
I'm sorry, Ms.
Potts, but there's a very good chance that it no longer exists.
What do you mean?
Pepper asked, frowning in confusion.
It's possible that Tony destroyed it himself, FRIDAY said gently, or that someone else did in order to keep him from using it for its intended purpose.
Another longshot idea occurred to Pepper then, one that chilled her to the bone even as it sent a shiver of fear down her spine.
You mean like Obadiah Stane?
she whispered.
