Bruce Wayne took another sip of his champagne, letting his eyes linger on her as he pretended to be occupied with the ice in his glass. He was facing the bar, the only man in the room not looking at the floor-to-ceiling windows and the darkness outside. As he watched, she turned away and said something to the two men beside her. They both laughed, but one of them also looked in Bruce’s direction, meeting his gaze for a split second before Bruce’s attention fell back to his drink. With a last, longing look at the woman, Bruce set his glass down on the bar and turned away. Some things are just too good to be true. He walked to the window and stared out at the city below. The new LexCorp building was built on the edge of town, as far from Gotham’s center as possible. From here, Bruce could see only the lights of neighboring buildings and the dark, churning mass that was Gotham Bay. The building was mostly empty, a real-estate ploy designed to lure potential tenants with promises of privacy and exclusivity. Only a handful of people had offices in the building right now, and as far as Bruce knew, he was the only one who’d been invited to tonight’s gala. But Lex Luthor wasn’t interested in real-estate deals, no matter how lucrative they were or how much they took money away from Wayne Enterprises. If Bruce wanted to find out what Lex was up to, he’d have to get him alone—and that was exactly why he was here. A hand fell on his shoulder, and he turned to see a waiter smiling at him. “Can I get you anything?” the young man asked. “No, thank you.” Bruce shook his head. “I’m fine.” The server opened his mouth to reply, but he didn’t get a chance. A tall, bald man in a black suit approached and whispered something in his ear. The waiter nodded and walked away without a word. Bruce turned back to the window. “Mr. Wayne,” Lex Luthor said. Bruce turned and faced him. “Mr. Luthor.” He looked much like he had the last time they’d spoken. He was only a few years older than Bruce, but his bald head and thinning hair made him look much older. Still, his body was lean and fit, and his pale eyes were sharp with intelligence as he looked at Bruce. “I’m glad you decided to come this evening,” Lex said. “I have business in Metropolis,” Bruce replied. “But you’ll stay for a little while?” Lex gestured toward a small group of people who were watching them from across the room. A tall blonde woman with a figure worthy of a centerfold magazine smiled at Lex, and he smiled back. “I’d be honored,” Bruce said. “Excellent.” Lex put a hand on Bruce’s back and guided him across the room. “Now then, tell me what I can do for you.” They stopped several feet from the group of people who’d been watching them. The woman in red was still staring at him, but now she wore a look of disdain. She looked away as Lex turned to face him. “I’ve been hearing things,” Bruce said. “About me?” Lex raised an eyebrow. “About your company.” Bruce looked away from Lex’s pale eyes and glanced around the room. “There are rumors that LexCorp is involved in some unsavory activities.” “And you think it’s true.”

Chapter One
The woman in the red dress was staring at him.
