Chapter 1
I was ten years old when I first left New Bark Town.
I had a backpack full of supplies, a Pokédex in my pocket, and a single Pokéball clipped to my belt.
The sun was shining, the sky was clear, and I was going to be the best Pokémon Trainer that ever lived.
I knew it in my bones.
My mom had packed me a lunch for the road, but I was too excited to eat it.
I ran through Route 29 with my Cyndaquil at my side, not stopping until we reached Cherrygrove City.
From there, we followed the path north to Violet City, where we stopped at the Pokémon Center to heal our team and challenge the Gym.
She had curly blonde hair and an eager smile, like she couldn’t wait another second to battle.
"Ethan!" she shouted when she saw me.
"It’s you! I knew you’d make it here first. Are you ready to battle?"
"Hey, Lyra," I said with a wave.
"I am ready. Are you sure you want to do this?"
My Cyndaquil wiggled in his Pokéball, eager for our next battle.
He knew that we were getting stronger every day.
Soon, there would be no one in Johto who could beat us, not even the Elite Four or the Champion himself.
Our goal was clear: become the strongest Trainer in all of Johto and claim our rightful place as Champions.

Lyra laughed, as if she thought I was joking.
She looked me up and down, her eyes lingering on my small frame and messy brown hair.
I was taller than most kids my age, but still at least a head shorter than Lyra herself.
Not that I cared what she thought of me.
We were rivals—friends—and we pushed each other to become better Trainers every day.
"Of course I do," Lyra said finally, her voice laced with confidence and excitement.
"I’m going to beat you this time! Just wait!"
"You can try," I shot back with a smirk.
Lyra rolled her eyes and reached for the Pokéball clipped to her belt as we stepped onto the battlefield outside the Gym doors.
Our Pokémon materialized in a flash of light—her Totodile against my Cyndaquil.

Our battle was fast and furious, each of us pushing our Pokémon to the limit in an attempt to emerge victorious.
Lyra was a strong Trainer; her Totodile was quick and powerful, and she had a natural talent for predicting her opponent’s moves.
But she had underestimated me—underestimated the bond I shared with my Cyndaquil and the strength we possessed as a team.
We traded barbs back and forth as our Pokémon fought: me taunting Lyra about how badly she was about to lose, and her retorting with claims that I wasn’t going all out because I wanted to let her win for once.
It was all in good fun, though.
I didn’t actually want her to win—and Lyra definitely didn’t want me to win either.
Johto's Anomaly: A Pokémon Trainer's Mystery
The Ember attack hit Totodile head-on, dealing a critical blow that sent its Trainer reeling in shock.
Lyra’s eyes widened as she witnessed how powerful my Cyndaquil had become—and how far I had come as a Trainer since we had last battled.
She had been so sure that this time would be different; that she would finally defeat me in battle and claim victory for herself.
But she had been wrong, and I had taken the win for myself instead.
In the end, Lyra was a good sport about it; she congratulated me on our victory and promised to train even harder so she could beat us next time we met in battle.
She knew how determined I was, and how much I wanted to become the Champion of Johto one day.
I wasn’t going to let anyone—not even my best friend and rival—stop me from reaching that goal.
Johto's Anomaly: A Pokémon Trainer's Mystery
Violet City was only the first stop on my journey, but I knew there were many more battles—and challenges—ahead of us.
The Johto League was full of strong Trainers, each one more powerful than the last, and I was going to defeat them all so I could claim my rightful place as Champion once and for all!
I'm a ten-year-old Pokémon Trainer from New Bark Town on a quest to become the greatest Trainer of them all.
