Chapter 1
I was going to die.
Not in the literal sense, but I was definitely going to be humiliated.
The kind of humiliation that would follow me for the rest of my life.
And all because I had a big mouth.
"Elara Thorne," Professor Blackwell called out, his voice echoing through the classroom.
I stood up from my desk and smoothed down my skirt before walking to the front of the room where he stood.
He handed me a small glass vial filled with a clear liquid and gestured toward the large cauldron sitting on a table in front of him.
"Please add your element to the potion."
I was an Elemental, meaning that I wielded one of the four elements: earth, air, water, or fire.
I knew from previous classes that my element was water magic.
Just as some people were able to control electricity or telekinesis, I had been born with the power to manipulate water.
But today…something felt different.
As I stared at the cauldron in front of me and concentrated on adding my magic to it, I could feel something new stirring inside of me.
It wasn't just water magic this time; it was something else entirely.
My hands began to shake as I uncorked the vial and poured its contents into the potion.
The liquid immediately turned a pale blue color, but it didn't stop there.
The blue spread rapidly throughout the cauldron, swirling like a whirlpool before shooting up into the air in a column of light.
The entire room went silent as everyone watched in awe, myself included, as the blue magic danced around us like fireflies before disappearing completely.
I gasped in shock as I felt my power drain from me, leaving me feeling weak and shaky all over again.
Elemental Hearts at Arcane Academy
I was a very rare type of Elemental called a Water Mage, which meant that I could wield my magic in its purest form—water.
But what I had just done wasn't water magic, at least not exactly.
It was some new and completely unknown kind of power that I couldn't even begin to explain.
I shook my head as Professor Blackwell stared at me with wide eyes, clearly just as shocked as everyone else by what had just happened.
"Well…that was unexpected," he said finally, smiling weakly at our classmates who were all whispering excitedly among themselves.
"Elara," Aiden whispered, his voice filled with concern as he placed a hand on my arm.

I sat nervously in Professor Blackwell's class, tapping my fingers against the desk as I waited for him to call my name.
The other students around me seemed just as nervous as I was, whispering quietly among themselves and fidgeting in their seats as we waited for our turn to demonstrate our powers.
Today was a big day for us; it was the day we would all show off our elemental abilities and prove how far we had come over the past few months since we started school here at the academy.
I knew that most of my classmates were excited about getting up in front of everyone and showing off their powers, but I couldn't help but feel terrified instead.
I had been born with the ability to control water magic, and since coming here to the academy, I had learned how to harness my power in new and exciting ways.
But there was something different about my magic today, and I didn't know what it was.
The day before, a new form of magic had suddenly emerged from within me during an exercise with Aiden Clarke and Lucas Reyes—two students who also happened to be my best friends.
One second I was trying to bend a small stream into the shape of a heart as part of our assignment, and the next there were waves crashing against the walls and ceiling as some unknown force burst forth from me.
Everyone had been in shock for several minutes after that; no one could explain what had just happened or how I had managed to unlock some new and powerful form of magic like that.
And now, less than twenty-four hours later, it was happening again.

I could feel the strange energy inside of me, bubbling up like a pot of boiling water as I prepared to demonstrate my power.
My hands trembled with nerves as I waited for Professor Blackwell to call out my name, unsure what exactly would happen when I tried to access my magic this time.
Would it be water magic again, or would it be something else?
I couldn't say for sure, and that terrified me more than anything else.
"Elara Thorne," Professor Blackwell called out, gesturing for me to stand up from my desk.
"All right then," he said with a smile as I slowly made my way over to him at the front of the room.
"Whenever you're ready."

I asked as we sat side by side in the library.
It had been two days since my powers had gone haywire in Professor Blackwell’s class, and I was still trying to regain my composure.
I didn’t want to be seen as some kind of freak—though, I know better than to care about what other people think of me.
I just don’t want to become some kind of threat to others.
Aiden looked at me, slightly taken aback by my question.
He then chuckled softly and shrugged his shoulders.
"I never did learn how to control it," he replied quietly.
"But you have such an incredible grasp of your fire powers!"
I exclaimed, surprised by his admission.

I'd always been in awe of Aiden's powers, and how well he commanded them.
He had been the strongest fire user at Arcane Academy ever since we started school here together three years ago.
Aiden was also the reigning champion of our annual tournament against Wizardry College and Sorcerer's Citadel, where students from the three schools came together to show off their magical abilities and compete for the top spot.
It was a huge honor to be chosen as one of the six representatives for our school, and I felt grateful every day to be able to attend such an incredible institution like Arcane Academy.
"Believe me when I say this, Elara," he replied, staring straight ahead with an intense look in his eyes.

"It took me years to master my powers, and even then, I still struggle with them sometimes."
He paused for a moment before continuing.
"You didn't see the look on my father's face when he found out that I had burned down an entire forest because I couldn't control my magic."
Aiden looked away, a pained expression on his face as he thought back to that day.
There was no trace of his usual cocky and confident attitude in that moment, it was like he was a completely different person altogether.
I’d never seen him so vulnerable before, and it startled me more than I cared to admit.
It was difficult for me to picture Aiden having doubts and insecurities about himself, especially when it came to something like his magic or his position in life as heir of the Clarke family dynasty.
