I was a blueberry.
I was a big, round, blueberry.
And I was not happy about it.
It all started in the inventing room.
Willy Wonka had just finished showing us his latest invention, a stick of gum that was actually a three-course meal.
He’d given it to Charlie Bucket, the little boy who’d found the golden ticket in his chocolate bar and won a tour of Wonka’s factory.
Charlie had tried the gum and said it tasted delicious, but then he started feeling sick.
He said he could feel himself swelling up like a balloon and he didn’t know what to do.
Wonka told him to stand still and not to panic, but Charlie was panicking anyway.
He was growing bigger and bigger by the second, and he looked like he was about to pop.
Wonka explained that the gum wasn’t quite ready yet—it still needed some adjustments—and that’s why he hadn’t released it in stores.
He was a big, round, blueberry.
As soon as I saw what was happening to Charlie, I spat out my gum.
I didn’t care if it was losing me the contest.
I didn’t want to be a blueberry, and that was that.
But it was too late for Charlie, and it was too late for me too.
I’d already swallowed my piece of gum, so there was nothing I could do.
It was just a matter of time before I turned into a blueberry too.
Willy Wonka had warned us that the gum wasn’t quite ready for sale yet, but we were welcome to take a piece.
He said it was his most amazing invention yet, and it would revolutionize the whole of the food industry.
The gum was called tomato soup.
“It’s fabulous soup,” said Willy Wonka, “and it’s very good for you too.”
I couldn’t believe him.
There’s no way you could get all the goodness of a bowl of soup from just one tiny stick of gum.
But Wonka insisted that it had taken years of research and millions of dollars to develop the recipe, and that it was absolutely perfect.
“Not only is it tomato soup,” he said, “but it’s great tomato soup—absolutely terrific tomato soup.”
Then he offered the gum around to everyone in the group and told us we could take a piece and try it if we wanted.
He said it tasted like tomato soup and it was filling like tomato soup, but you could chew it and swallow it all up in just five seconds flat!
It was super-soup in stick form!
A couple of people took some gum and popped it into their mouths, but then Wonka told them not to chew it yet.
He said they had to wait until he was ready so he could supervise, making sure they followed his directions exactly so they didn’t get into trouble.
Of course, no one listened to him.
The two people who’d taken gum just ignored him and started chewing, so Willy Wonka moved on to showing off his next invention: roast beef with baked potato.
That’s what he’d given to Charlie—dinner in one stick of gum.
After that, there would be dessert.
Blueberry pie.
But as Charlie started blowing up into a giant blueberry, everyone else in the group lost their appetites.
They didn’t want to try the other flavors after seeing what had happened to him, and they weren’t sure they trusted Willy Wonka anymore either.
So now, no one else was going to turn into a blueberry.
Willy Wonka would see to that!
I wasn’t so sure myself, but I kept quiet.
There wasn’t much point arguing with him.
He probably wouldn’t listen to me anyway.
“Now,” said Willy Wonka, “you must listen to me very carefully, my dear friends.
There are still one or two things we don’t know about this gum.
I am not altogether sure what is going to happen when we come to the dessert part of the meal.
But let’s try it and see!”
“But you said it wasn’t ready yet,” someone pointed out.
“It isn’t,” said Wonka.
