I woke up a vampire.
My eyes snapped open, and I sat up so fast that my head spun.
I was in the woods, lying on a bed of leaves.
The last thing I remembered was walking home from school, and then…nothing.
I couldn’t remember anything after that.
I looked down at my hands and saw that they were covered in blood.
My blood, I realized, as the pain in my neck came back to me in a rush.
I touched the two small puncture wounds on my throat and felt the tears welling up in my eyes.
This couldn’t be happening to me.
I was only seventeen years old—I had my whole life ahead of me!
And now I was dead?
No, not dead—undead.
A vampire, just like Lucas Blackwood had been trying to tell me all along.
I heard a twig snap behind me and whirled around to see Lucas standing there, watching me with an unreadable expression on his face.
He was the one who had done this to me.
“What did you do?”
I demanded, scrambling to my feet.
My head was pounding now, and my vision was still a little blurry.
I blinked a few times and tried to focus, but it was like the whole world was moving in slow motion.
“You’re okay,” Lucas said, holding up his hands in a placating gesture.
“I didn’t hurt you.
You just need to take it easy for a minute.”
I wanted to scream at him, to demand answers, but my throat was so dry that I could barely even speak.
“Why can’t I remember?”
I asked instead.
“Remember what?”
And that’s when I realized that I wasn’t alone.
I looked around and saw that we were in the middle of the woods, but there were other people there too.
Other vampires, like me.
And they were all staring at me with hungry eyes.
I jerked back in horror as one of them stepped forward, reaching out for me with his long, slender fingers.
Lucas blocked his path, catching his wrist in midair before he could touch me.
“Don’t you dare,” he growled, his voice low and threatening.
But the other vampire didn’t seem to care.
He shrugged off Lucas’s hand and took another step toward me, his mouth opening wide to reveal his long, sharp fangs.
“Lucas,” I whispered, my voice breaking as panic set in.
Lucas’s eyes flicked back to me for a split second.
“Trust me,” he said, his voice barely louder than a whisper.
And then he was gone.
He moved so fast that I almost didn’t see him go.
One second he was standing in front of me, and the next he was on top of the other vampire, pinning him to the ground with a snarl that sent shivers down my spine.
The other vampires moved closer now, circling around us like a pack of wolves.
But Lucas didn’t seem worried.
He looked calmer than I had ever seen him, his face blank and emotionless as he surveyed the other vampires one by one, as if deciding which one to take out first.
The second vampire lunged at him, but Lucas was too fast for him.
He met the attack head-on, driving his fist into the other vampire’s face so hard that I heard bones snap beneath the skin.
He moved on to the next one just as quickly, taking them out one by one.
I watched in awe as he fought them, moving so fast that it was all a blur of motion and color.
And then, just as quickly as it had started, it was over.
The other vampires lay motionless on the ground around us, their bodies broken and bruised beyond recognition.
