I was out camping with my sister Sarah and our friend Alex when I found the machine.
It was just sitting there in the woods, humming quietly to itself.
I’d gone for a walk to get away from the girls for a bit, and I guess I’d gone further than I thought.
I had no idea what it was, but it looked like something out of a sci-fi movie.
It was about the size of a phone booth, with a door on one side and a bunch of blinking lights on top.
I walked around it, trying to figure out what it was doing there.
There weren’t any power lines or anything nearby, so I didn’t see how it could be running.
And what was it running anyway?
It didn’t seem to be connected to anything at all.
I reached out and touched the door, half expecting it to shock me or something.
But nothing happened, so I pushed on it experimentally.
It swung open easily, revealing an empty interior.
I was out camping with my sister Sarah and our friend Alex, trying to make the most of our last summer before we all headed off to college.
We’d been friends since we were kids, and it was hard to believe that soon we’d all be going our separate ways.
But for now, we were just enjoying the warm weather and each other’s company.
Sarah and Alex were sitting by the fire, laughing and talking as they roasted marshmallows.
I’d slipped away for a bit, needing some time alone to clear my head.
Walking through the woods, I took deep breaths of the fresh air, letting the sounds of nature wash over me.
But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake the feeling of restlessness that had been nagging at me all day.
I wanted to be excited about the future, about all the new experiences that college would bring.
But instead, I felt trapped, like I was being pulled in a direction I didn’t want to go.
As I walked, lost in thought, a glint of metal caught my eye through the trees.
Curiosity piqued, I changed direction, making my way towards whatever it was that had caught my attention.
The glint was coming from a small clearing in the woods, and as I stepped into it, I saw a strange metal object standing in the center.
It looked like a phone booth, but it had a bunch of blinking lights on top that didn’t look like they belonged on anything from this planet.
As I watched, the lights started to pulse in time with my heartbeat, and I felt a rush of dizziness wash over me.
I stumbled backwards, feeling sick to my stomach.
The object looked like some sort of alien machine, and for a second, I thought about running back to camp and telling Sarah and Alex what I’d found.
But then the dizziness passed, and a strange sense of peace washed over me.
I walked back over to the machine, feeling strangely calm despite the fact that I was pretty sure I was about to do something really stupid.
Without hesitating any further, I walked up the machine and stepped inside.
The interior was empty except for a small metal pedestal in the center of the floor.
It was about waist high and shaped like a shallow bowl.
As I watched, it started to fill with a strange liquid that looked like liquid mercury.
The liquid kept rising until it was almost level with the top of the pedestal.
That’s when I saw that it wasn’t really liquid at all.
It looked like mercury, but it was writhing and twisting like some sort of living thing.
Panic surged through me again, but before I could do anything more than take a step back, the mercury surged up out of the pedestal and enveloped me.
There were no signs or anything warning against approaching it, and it didn’t seem to be connected to anything dangerous.
In fact, as I studied it further, the machine seemed almost inviting.
It was like a siren call, pulling me towards it with a force I couldn’t resist.
Without really knowing why, I slipped between the trees and made my way towards the clearing where the object stood.
The closer I got, the stronger the pull became until every fiber of my being seemed to be urging me forward.
A strange feeling settled in the pit of my stomach as I stepped into the clearing and finally got a good look at the object that had caught my attention.
It was a machine or at least something that looked like one.
About the size of a phone booth.
But that was where any similarities ended.
This thing looked like it came from another world entirely.
Its surface was covered in strange symbols and markings that didn’t resemble anything I’d ever seen before.
And as I got closer, I saw that they weren’t just etchings on the surface they were glowing.
My breath caught in my throat as I stared at the mysterious machine.
A shiver ran down my spine.
But not a bad one.
More like a feeling of excitement and anticipation.
I could feel the hum of its power vibrating through me, and without really knowing why, I reached out my hand and touched the metal.
The instant my skin made contact with its surface, a bolt of lightning seemed to shoot through me.
My entire body tensed up as if I’d been hit with an electrical shock.
A wave of dizziness washed over me.
Staggering backwards, I clamped a hand over my mouth and fought back the urge to be sick.
What was happening?
That weird fog was back.
I shook my head and tried to clear it.
But it was like trying to think through molasses.
There was something about this machine something important but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what.
All I knew for sure was that I had to get away from here and fast.
Turning on my heel, I stumbled away from the machine as quickly as I could.
I left the clearing, but the further I got from the machine, the more the fog in my mind seemed to lift.
My thoughts grew clearer, and with that clarity came a sense of urgency and determination.
I spun around and retraced my steps, moving through the trees with a purpose I didn’t fully understand.
The machine was still there, waiting for me in the middle of the clearing with its lights blinking and its symbols glowing like some sort of alien beacon.
This time, I didn’t hesitate.
I walked right up to it and pushed on the door, half expecting it to be locked this time or maybe not even there at all.
But it swung open easily, revealing an empty interior just like before.
I kept walking slowly toward it, until I finally stepped inside!
I couldn’t resist the urge to touch the machine again, to see if that same strange energy would shoot through me once more.
My fingertips brushed against the metal, and a bolt of lightning shot through me, as if I’d been shocked again by static electricity.
This time, though, it was different.
The world around me started to spin, and I felt myself falling, tumbling into darkness until there was nothing left but the sensation of falling and the sound of my own panicked breathing echoing in my ears.
When I woke up, everything was different.
It took me a moment to realize what had changed, but when I did, it felt like a punch in the gut.
The air was fresher somehow, cleaner, and there was a lightness to it that I had never noticed before.
My head was pounding, and when I went to move my hand to rub at my temples, I realized that something was different there too.
I was lying on my back, and when I looked down at myself, I saw that my body was smaller, narrower, more delicate in shape.
I was… I was a…
A girl!
A wave of confusion washed over me, but as I sat up and looked around, there was no denying the truth.
This wasn’t a dream.
I really had turned into a girl.
The colors were more vivid, the sounds sharper.
And there was something else, something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
It was like a whisper at the edge of my senses, a feeling of…
I lay there, trying to piece everything together and make sense of where I was and what had happened.
But that other feeling that sense of completeness kept tugging at the edges of my mind, distracting me from everything else.
It was like an itch that I couldn’t scratch, an emptiness that had been filled without me even realizing that it was there in the first place.
I didn’t know how long I lay there, lost in thought, but eventually, I managed to push myself up off the ground and take stock of my surroundings.
I was still in the clearing with the strange machine, but it seemed different now.
Calmer, somehow, as if its purpose had already been fulfilled and all that was left was for me to figure out what that purpose was.
But as much as I wanted to, I knew that there was no way for me to know for sure.
All I could do now was try to figure out how to live with this new body and this new life that had been forced upon me.
Deep down, though, I knew that this wasn’t something that I could hide forever.
Sarah and Alex come running and stopped upon seeing me with shocked expressions on their faces!
“Mark?” Sarah said.
“What happened to you?”
I asked, looking at my sister who had suddenly transformed into a dude.
“Are you okay?”
“No, I’m not okay!”
I shot back.
“What the hell happened to me?”
“I don’t know.” Sarah replied.
“I was just sitting by the fire with Alex and then I heard you yell.It took us a while to find you.”
“I wasn’t yelling.” I said.
“I just woke up and saw I’d changed.I didn’t know what to do.”
“Well, first things first.” Sarah replied.
“Try not to panic.”
“Not panic?”
I yelled back.
“Easy for you to say!”
“Okay, okay,” Sarah said.
“Come on out of there.Let’s talk about this.”
I tried to stand up but my clothes felt weird.
They were too tight in some places and too loose in others.
It was like they’d been stretched and reshaped to fit my new body, but not quite enough to be comfortable.
Sighing in frustration, I finally managed to get to my feet and step out of the alien machine.
As soon as I did, though, I knew that something was wrong.
The world suddenly seemed much higher than it had before, and when I looked down at myself, I saw that my feet were much closer together than they should have been.
I lifted one of them up and gasped in shock when I saw what looked back at me.
They were slim and delicate, with narrow toes and high arches.
And they were wearing a pair of white lace panties that were definitely not mine.
I lifted my hands up in front of my face and saw that they were small and dainty as well, with long slender fingers and carefully manicured nails that had been painted a shiny shade of red.
But the biggest surprise came when I looked at my arms, which were smooth and unblemished, with not a hair or a callus to be seen.
“Something’s wrong.” I said, my voice sounding much higher than it should have.
“Something is definitely wrong.”
“What?” Sarah asked, her eyes going wide with shock.
“I’m in the wrong body.” I said.
“Just look at me.”
Sarah’s eyes went wide and she took a step back, her whole body trembling with shock.
“No.” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“No, this can’t be happening.”
I moved closer to her, reaching out to take her hand, but she jerked away from my touch.
“It is happening.” I said.
“Look at me, Sarah.Look at what they did to me.”
She turned to leave, but then stopped and turned back to face me, tears streaming down her face.
“I’m so sorry.” she said.
“I don’t know what else to say.”
She turned and ran off into the woods, leaving me standing there all alone.
As soon as she was out of sight, the first tears started slipping down my cheeks.
This couldn’t be happening.
It just couldn’t.
But even as I told myself that, deep down I knew that it was true.
Suddenly I excused myself to take a leak behind some shrubs and that's when I noticed that I still have my penis...!
The words burst out of my mouth before I could stop them.
It wasn't that I had forgotten what Sarah looked like, but rather that seeing her standing there made everything so much more real.
I felt like I was in some sort of surreal dream, but even as I told myself that, I knew that it wasn't true.
This was really happening, and there was no way to change it.
Sarah moved closer to me, reaching out to take my hand.
“Calm down, Marsha.” she said.
“Everything's going to be okay.”
“How can you say that?”
I demanded, pulling away from her touch.
“You don't know anything about this!”
“I know that you're my little sister and that I love you no matter what.” Sarah said.
“But how can you love this?”
I asked, gesturing down at my body.
“This isn't me!”
Sarah sighed and ran a hand through her long blonde hair, which had been tied back in a loose ponytail.
“It doesn't matter.” she said.
“It's just skin and bones.
You're still the same person inside, and nothing can ever change that.”
I wanted to believe that.
I really did.
But even as Sarah said the words, the doubts were already starting to creep in.
How could she say that this body wasn't important?
She didn't have to live in it, after all.
Sarah must have sensed my thoughts because she reached out to take my hand.
“Come on.” she said.
“Let's go back to the campsite and we'll talk about this there.
Maybe we can figure something out.”
I nodded and let her lead me back through the trees, though deep down I knew that there wasn't anything that we could do.
This wasn't some sort of weird dream or nightmare.
It was all too real and nothing could ever change that.
When we arrived back at the campsite, Sarah went over to my backpack and started rummaging through it.
“What are you doing?”
I asked, moving closer to see what she had found.
“I want to check something.” Sarah said as she pulled out my wallet and started flipping through its contents.
Finally she found my driver's license and held it out for me to see.
“Look at it.” she said.
I took the license from her hand and stared down at the photo ID that had been issued to me two years ago when I had gotten my driver's license for the first time.
The name on the card was definitely mine, but other than that it looked completely foreign.
“Marsha Hicks.” I said.
“That's what it says.”
“That's who you are now.” Sarah said.
“The machine changed your body, but it didn't change your name.”
“It didn't even change my last name.” I said in shock.
“I'm still a Hicks even though I don't look like one anymore.”
Sarah nodded her head in agreement.
