I was sitting in my room, counting the money I made from selling drugs.
I was a dealer, and I was good at it.
I was only sixteen years old, but I was already making more money than most adults on this island.
I lived with my older brother and my mother in a small house in O'ahu.
My brother, Koa, worked as a security guard at the airport, and he was the one who brought home most of the money.
But he didn't mind that I was selling drugs on the side.
He knew that we needed all the money we could get to pay for our bills and our father's medical expenses.
My father passed away two years ago from cancer, and it left us all heartbroken.
He was a good man, and he didn't deserve to die so young.
But life went on, and we had to move forward without him.
I finished counting the money and put it in my drawer.
Just then, Koa walked into my room without knocking first.
"Get ready," he said, with a voice as deep as the ocean.
"We're leaving in fifteen minutes."
"For what?" I asked.
If he wanted me to help him with something, he needed to tell me first.
He knew how much I hated surprises, but he kept them coming anyway.
"We're going to the car wash," he replied.
"Mom wants us to clean her car."
I nodded and watched as he left my room.
I thought about making up an excuse so that I wouldn't have to go, but then I changed my mind.
I owed my mother a lot more than just cleaning her car, so I would do it for her.
I stood up and walked to my closet.
I looked at all the dresses that I never wore and sighed.
My friends thought that I was a spoiled rich kid, but they couldn't be more wrong.
The truth was that my family was struggling financially, and we were barely getting by.
My mother and Koa didn't know about my side job, and they never would.
They believed that I was saving up for college, which was why they were okay with me not working a real job.
But in reality, I was doing something illegal, and I was ashamed of it.
I changed into a t-shirt and shorts, put on my flip-flops, and left my room.
My brother and mother were waiting for me in the living room, so I grabbed the keys to my mother's car and followed them outside.
We all got inside the car, and I drove us to the car wash.
When we got there, my mother got out of the car and walked to the waiting area while Koa and I started cleaning the car.
It took us two hours to clean every inch of it, and by the time we were done, the sun was already setting.
We drove back home, parked the car in the garage, and went inside to have dinner.
My mother cooked us some fried chicken and rice, and we ate in silence.
"Mom is going out with her friends tonight," Koa told me after dinner.
"So you're in charge."
I nodded without saying anything, and he left the house shortly after that.
I went back to my room and grabbed my phone from my desk.
I had missed a few calls from some of my clients, so I called them back one by one.
A few hours later, I was done with all of my deliveries and was ready to go to bed.
I turned off the lights in my room and laid down on my bed.
I stared at the ceiling for a few minutes before closing my eyes and falling asleep.
The next day, I was working at the car wash again when my phone started ringing in my pocket.
I took it out of my pocket and saw that it was one of my clients who needed some supplies delivered to his house.
I told him that I would be there in an hour, finished washing the car that I was working on, and then drove to his address.
