The grand court was packed with nobles, all eager to see me die.
I could feel their hatred, their disgust, and their anger.
I was the first dragon rider in history to be accused of treason.
The first to be sentenced to death.
And the first to be executed alongside my dragon.
All because of a crime I didn’t commit.
I stood tall and proud, my chin held high as I faced the king and queen on their thrones.
My hands were bound behind my back, and my silver hair was loose around my shoulders.
My piercing blue eyes scanned the crowd, searching for any sign of hope or mercy.
But there was none to be found.
The king’s voice boomed through the room as he read out my sentence.
“Elara Thorne, you have been found guilty of treason against the crown,” he said, his voice cold and unfeeling.
“You have been accused of conspiring with our enemies to overthrow this kingdom and assassinate our family.”
I wanted to scream that it wasn’t true.
But the words caught in my throat, and I could only watch in horror as the heavy thud of the charges against me echoed through the throne room.
The whispers of the courtiers faded away, and a heavy silence settled over the room.
I felt Seraphina’s golden scales shimmer against my skin as she shifted restlessly, her magnificent form bound by thick chains.
I reached out to her with my mind, trying to offer her some semblance of comfort.
But she was too far gone, her eyes filled with despair as she let out a sorrowful cry.
The king continued to read out the charges against me, his voice growing more and more impassioned with each word.
He demanded that I renounce my claim to the throne and swear my loyalty to him once more.
But I was too proud for that.
Too stubborn to beg for mercy from the man who would see me dead.
So, instead, I raised my head high and met his gaze head-on.
I swear on my honor that I am innocent,” I said, my voice strong and clear.
The king stared at me for a long moment, his gray eyes cold and unyielding.
Then, finally, he spoke again.
He condemned us both to death by beheading.
The words hit me like a physical blow, and I swayed on my feet, the blood draining from my face.
The crowd erupted into a chorus of gasps and whispers, their voices rising until they were almost deafening.
Some of them were outraged that the king would condemn a dragon rider to such a fate, while others were relieved that justice would finally be served.
They called us abominations, monsters unworthy of living among humans.
And then there were those who simply could not believe that Seraphina, a dragon revered as a god by our people, could ever be accused of such a crime.
I wanted to scream at them.
To make them see reason.
But there was no point in arguing with the king’s judgment.
I was just a girl, and Seraphina was just a dragon.
So we stood there in silence, bound and helpless against the weight of the king’s judgment.
