I am chased by the Lord's guards in the dark alley and then saved by a mysterious talkative girl.
“Roderick, you’re never going to catch him if you keep shouting like that,” one of the guards snickers.
I recognize the voice as one of the captain’s personal guards.
He’s a big oaf with sausage fingers and a permanent scowl, and I’m pretty sure he hates my guts.
“Try being useful for once and help me look,” Captain Blackwood snaps, his voice low and threatening in a way that suggests he’s just barely holding back his anger.
“The boy can’t have gotten far.
He was already winded by the time we caught up with him.”
I hear the guards mutter in agreement, and relief floods through me.
They don’t know where I am.
Not yet, at least.
But it’s only a matter of time before they find me, and I have to get out of here while I still can.
I take a deep, shuddering breath and push myself away from the wall, darting down the alley as quickly and quietly as I can.
The guards are still looking for me, but I can hear them getting closer by the second.
Their armor clinks and clatters with each step they take, and my heart pounds in my chest in time with the sound.
I don’t have much magic left to work with, but if there was ever a time to use it—
No, I tell myself firmly.
Using magic would only draw attention to myself.
Attention that I don’t want, especially not from the Lord’s guards.
And who knows what might happen if they capture me again?
The dungeons were bad enough the first time.
If they put me back in there, I don’t know if I’ll even make it out alive.
But what other choice do I have?
The alley is coming to an end just up ahead, and I can see the faint glimmer of moonlight on water reflecting off the wall in front of me.
There’s no way out that way.
But maybe…
A small voice in the back of my mind reminds me that I promised my mother I wouldn’t do anything foolish.
I push it aside and shove my hand into my pocket, curling my fingers around the small wooden charm that sits there.
I’m not a fool.
I’m just desperate.
The guards are almost on top of me now.
I can hear them breathing hard and fast as they run through the narrow alleyways in search of me.
Their voices are taunting and cruel as they call out my name again and again.
It’s only a matter of time before they find me, and when they do…
I don’t even want to think about what will happen then.
I promised my mother I wouldn’t do anything foolish.
But I don’t know what choice I have.
The guards round the corner behind me as I skid to a stop at the end of the alleyway.
There’s nothing but water in front of me now, except for the ladder that leads up to the street above.
It’s not much of an escape route, but it’s all I’ve got.
