I don’t need to fall at her feet.
I don’t need to beg.
It’s her choice.
There is no right or wrong.
But I can’t take this anymore.
I have to tell her.
I took a deep breath, opened the front door, and stepped into the warm light of Sarah’s living room.
She was sitting on the couch, a book lying forgotten in her lap as she looked up at me, her brow furrowed in concern.
“David?” she said, setting the book aside.
“Is everything okay?
Her green eyes searched my face for answers, but I could only offer a weak smile in return.
“Can we talk?”
I had thought about what I would say to her a million times over the past few weeks, but now that I was here, the words seemed to have escaped me.
I stood there, frozen in place, like a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car.
This was it—the moment I had been dreading and longing for in equal measure.
Sarah and I had been best friends since childhood, growing up on the same street and attending the same schools from first grade on.
We had shared every secret, every laugh, and every tear over the years, and I couldn’t imagine my life without her in it.
But lately, things had begun to shift between us, and I knew that if I didn’t speak up soon, I would lose my chance forever.
I knew it was risky—I could very well end up losing Sarah as a friend—but even worse was the thought of losing myself by keeping my feelings locked away for all eternity.
“Sure,” Sarah said, opening her arms to me in invitation.
I crossed the room and sat down beside her, suddenly self-conscious about how close we were.
She reached out and took my hand in hers, her touch warm and comforting against my skin as she squeezed it gently.
“What’s going on?”
I turned my head and looked at her, taking in every detail of her face—the gentle curve of her cheeks, the sweep of her curly blonde hair, and those green eyes that always seemed to see straight through me.
“I don’t know how to say this,” I said at last, my voice barely a whisper.
Sarah’s lips curved into a smile as she gave my hand another squeeze.
“Just say it, whatever it is.
You know you can tell me anything.”
I swallowed hard and nodded.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath before looking back at her.
“I’m in love with you,” I said.
My heart was pounding so hard that I was afraid it would leap out of my chest.
I braced myself for her response—wondering if she would pull away from me, tell me that she didn’t feel the same way.
But when I looked back at Sarah’s face, she was smiling at me with tears in her eyes.
“David,” she said.
“I love you too.”
