In fact, it looked like nothing more than a large, old-fashioned circus tent with intricate designs etched into the faded canvas.
Unlike the brightly colored tents that surrounded it, this one was mostly white, with only a few splashes of color here and there.
The carnival was in town, and it was the perfect way to spend Halloween night.
The three of us had been friends since freshman year of college, and we always made it a point to hang out together on Halloween.
There weren’t any signs advertising what was inside, but there didn’t need to be.
This year, we decided to check out the traveling carnival that had set up shop on the outskirts of town.
There was something about this tent that made me want to go inside and check it out.
It was supposed to be the biggest one yet, with rides, games, and food vendors.
“Let’s go find out,” Sarah said with a smile as she took my hand and started leading me toward the entrance.
There was even a haunted house and a freak show.
“Come on, Em, what are you waiting for?”
We’d been walking around for a couple of hours now, taking in all the sights and sounds.
Jake asked as he tugged on my arm.
“It looks cool.” He wasn’t wrong.
The place was packed with people of all ages, from young kids to college students like us.
There were even a few families with babies in strollers.
In fact, it looked like something out of a storybook or fairy tale, with its flickering lanterns and dancing shadows that seemed to come alive on the ground around us.
The smell of popcorn and cotton candy filled the air, along with the sounds of laughter and screams coming from the various rides and attractions.
As we got closer, I could hear some soft music playing in the background.
It sounded melodic and haunting at the same time, and for some reason, it gave me chills.
“Come on, Em, we’re going on that ride,” Jake said, pointing to the Ferris wheel.
I shook my head, shooting him an apologetic smile.
I paused just outside the entrance and glanced around, trying to figure out what had changed.
That’s when I realized that the carnival wasn’t as busy as it had been before.
“I think I’ll pass this time,” I said.
The sounds of laughter and music had faded away, leaving behind an eerie silence that was almost deafening in its intensity.
The last time we went on a ride, I almost puked all over him.
It was not one of my finer moments.
It was like the entire world had gone quiet, and all that was left were the three of us standing outside this strange tent, waiting to see what was inside.
I shivered and took a step back, suddenly feeling very exposed and vulnerable.
Sarah laughed, a sound that was always warm and friendly.
“Good call,” she said.
I wanted to leave, to go back to the safety of the main part of the carnival, but for some reason, my feet wouldn’t move.
Instead, they seemed rooted to the ground as if they were waiting for something.
We were all juniors in college now, and even though we’d partied together plenty of times before, the idea of going to a frat party just didn’t sound as appealing as it used to.
We were getting older, and the novelty of drinking in a crowded room with a bunch of strangers had lost its appeal.
And that’s when I heard it, the soft, melodic voice coming from inside the tent, calling out to me like a siren song, drawing me closer to the entrance with every word.
“Hello?”
Instead, we’d decided to do something different this year.
So, we’d skipped the parties and gone to the movies instead.
the voice said again, this time louder than before.
But when we found out that the carnival was in town, we couldn’t resist coming out for a little while to see what all the fuss was about.
“It’s so nice to have visitors.”
“Who is that?”
With classes in full swing and midterms coming up, this was exactly what we needed to let loose and blow off some steam.
“There’s a game I want to play,” Sarah said as she pointed to one of the game booths.
Sarah asked as she glanced around, looking for the source of the voice.
“Let’s go check it out.”
“Where is it coming from?”
“Hello?”
“Sounds good to me,” I said as I followed her through the crowd.
the voice said, this time accompanied by a soft, haunting melody.
We’d been walking around for a while now, and even though my feet were starting to ache from all the walking, I wasn’t ready to leave just yet.
“We’ve been expecting you.
I wanted to see everything before we went home.
As we made our way down one of the main streets in town, the sound of music and laughter grew louder.
Please, come inside.”
I shivered again, but not from the cold.
The air was filled with the scents of fried food and funnel cake.
I could almost taste it on my tongue, it smelled so good.
There was something about that voice that made me want to go inside, to see who it belonged to.
It was like it was calling out to me, drawing me closer with every word.
The streaks of color from the rides lit up the night sky like a rainbow, casting an almost magical glow over the quiet town.
Even though it was still early in the evening, there were already a ton of people milling around.
“Let’s go find out,” Jake said with a shrug as he started toward the entrance.
I glanced at Sarah, hoping she would have a better idea of what to do, but she just shook her head and shrugged.
It was easy to see why this carnival had become such a popular attraction.
It was like something out of a movie, with all of its bright lights, loud music, and festive atmosphere.
“I don’t know,” she said with a frown.
“I have a bad feeling about this.”
It was hard to believe that in a few short weeks, this place would be nothing but an empty field once again.
I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness as I thought about all the people who worked here, who would soon be moving on to another town.
“Don’t be such a baby,” Jake said with a laugh as he grabbed my hand and started pulling me toward the entrance.
But then I remembered that this was just a temporary stop for them, and that they’d be moving on to another place soon enough.
“What could possibly go wrong?”
“I don’t know,” I said as I glanced over my shoulder.
“Let’s play one of those games,” Jake said as he pointed to one of the game booths.
That sounds like fun,” Sarah said with a smile.
But it was too late.
“What do you guys want to play?”
We were already at the entrance to the tent, and there was no turning back now.
I asked as I looked around.
