I was in the middle of a meeting when my phone rang.
I never took calls during a meeting, but when I saw Mia’s name flashing on the screen, I had to take it.
I excused myself and stepped out of the room, answering the call.
“Hey,” I said, my voice low.
“Where are you?”
she asked, her voice laced with panic.
“I’m in a meeting,” I replied.
“I need you to come to the hospital right now,” she said.
“What happened?”
I asked, my heart racing.
“Please just come,” she said before hanging up.
I didn’t waste any time and got into my car, driving as fast as I could to the hospital.
When I got there, I found Mia pacing back and forth in front of the emergency room.
She was wearing a pair of jeans and a white shirt that hugged her body perfectly, showing off her curves.
Her hair was tied up in a messy bun and she had no makeup on, yet she looked beautiful as ever.
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
I asked, pulling back to look at her.
“I’m so sorry I called you,” she said.
I didn’t understand what she was apologizing for.
“What happened?”
“Can you pretend that you’re my boyfriend?”
she asked in a rush.
I didn’t hesitate for a second.
I took her hand in mine and pulled her towards me.
She looked up at me, her eyes wide with panic.
I wrapped my arm around her waist and pulled her into me, holding her tightly against my body.
She wrapped her arms around me and buried her face in my chest as we continued to sway.
I wanted to tell her that it wasn’t a lie, but I knew that now wasn’t the right time.
The only thing that mattered was making her feel safe.
I inhaled deeply, taking in the scent of her shampoo and perfume, and I felt my entire body relax.
She was the only thing that could calm me down in a matter of seconds.
I didn’t know what it was about her, but there was just something different.
“I’m here, baby girl,” I whispered against the top of her head.
The sound of the guard clearing his throat pulled me away from my thoughts and I looked up at him, trying to hide my annoyance.
He was a new hire and he still wasn’t used to the way things worked around here.
I knew that he probably didn’t mean anything by it, but his timing couldn’t have been worse.
I gave him a cold look and he quickly scurried away, not saying anything else.
Mia pulled back and looked up at me.
Her eyes were red-rimmed, but there was such relief in them that I couldn’t help but smile at her gently.
“Are you feeling better now?”
She nodded and gave me a small smile before pulling away from me.
She wrung her hands together nervously before moving towards a chair and sitting down.
We were sitting in one of the waiting rooms in the hospital hallway.
The doctors told us that Mia’s brother would be out of surgery soon and that they would let us know about his condition as soon as the surgery was over.
Alessandro cleared his throat and I turned to look at him.
I could see the amusement in his eyes and I shook my head at him.
“Everything okay?”
he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I hate waiting,” I replied.
Alessandro nodded and went back to talking to the other men who were sitting around the table in front of us.
We were in the middle of a very important meeting and I knew that I should be there to lead it.
This was a huge opportunity for our family and I didn’t want to mess it up by not being there.
However, I couldn’t help it when Mia called me and she sounded like she was falling apart.
I had gotten a hold of Alessandro and asked him to come to the hospital and continue the meeting for me.
He had raised an eyebrow at me and I had known that he would make fun of me later for this.
But he agreed to do it and now he was leading the meeting in my absence.

“Do you think everything is okay with her brother?”
Alessandro asked quietly, leaning towards me so that only I would be able to hear him.
“Yeah,” I replied.
“I just don’t think she can handle waiting alone right now.”
He gave me a small smile before sitting back and going back to listening to what the man across from him was saying.
We sat in silence for the next few minutes, but we all jumped when my phone began to ring.
I quickly excused myself before stepping out of the room and answering the call.
“Hey,” I said as soon as I answered.
“Where are you?”
he asked, his voice low.
My hands began to shake as I listened to his voice on the other end of the line.
It was stupid for me to call him like this, but he was the only one that I could think of when I needed someone.
“I’m at the hospital,” I replied.
“What are you doing here?”
He sounded concerned and I knew that he would be worried when he heard that I was at the hospital right now.
“I need you to come here right now,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
“What happened?”
he asked immediately.
“I can’t talk about it over the phone,” I said.
“I just need you to be here with me, okay?”
“Okay,” he replied.
“Are you okay?”
he asked.
“I’m fine,” I replied.
“I just need you here with me.”
“I’ll be there soon,” he said before hanging up the phone.
I took a deep breath, hoping that everything would be okay.
The last thing that I needed was for Dominic to go crazy on the phone, especially since he was in the middle of an important meeting.
But I needed him here with me now more than ever.
As soon as we hung up, my heart began to race.
She had told me that she was at the hospital, but she hadn’t told me what was wrong.
And that was something that worried me.
The hospital was never a good place in my world, and if Mia was there, that meant that something serious had happened.
I wanted to call her back to ask her what had happened, but something told me that it wasn’t the best idea.
If something had happened to her brother, then she wouldn’t want to talk about it over the phone.
And it was clear that this was something that she wanted to keep between us for now.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t realize Alessandro was standing behind me until he touched my shoulder.
“Everything okay on your end?”
he asked, looking at me curiously.
“I need to go to her,” I replied, running my hand through my hair nervously.
“She’s alone at the hospital and she needs someone with her.”
Alessandro nodded understandingly before walking back into the room to finish the meeting without me.
I turned off my phone and began to walk towards the elevators.
The last thing that Mia needed was for me to be worrying about my business while this was happening.
Alessandro was perfectly capable of handling everything on his own, so I didn’t have to worry about anything happening while I was gone.
As soon as the elevator doors opened, I got in and pressed the button for the ground floor.
The ride down felt like it was taking forever, but as soon as the doors opened, I practically ran out of the building.
Secrets of Love and Loyalty
“Where are you?”
Mia’s sobs filled my ears, and I felt my heart breaking as I listened to her cry.
I was on my way to see her and I would be there as soon as I could, but it wasn’t helping me feel any better about what was happening on her end.
“Mia, where are you?”
I asked again, hoping that she would respond this time.
But she didn’t say anything, and I didn’t know what to do.
“Mia, please tell me where you are,” I said after a moment, trying to keep my voice calm.
“I need you to tell me so I can come and find you.”
She choked on a sob before finally responding.
“You’re on your way?”
she asked between sobs.
“I am,” I replied, relieved that she had finally answered me.
“I’ll be there soon, I promise. But I need you to tell me where you are so I can find you.”
After a moment of silence, she told me where she was and then hung up the phone without saying anything else.
I don’t know how long it took me to get to the hospital, but it felt like an eternity.
My mind kept racing, thinking about all of the possible things that could have happened while I was on my way here, and it was driving me crazy.
And without knowing why Mia had called for me, I didn’t know how to prepare myself for what I would see when I finally got there.
But nothing could have prepared me for what I saw when I arrived at the hospital and went inside to find Mia waiting for me on a bench outside the emergency room door.
She had her face buried in her hands, and her whole body was shaking with sobs.
I could hear her sniffles from across the room, and they tore at my heartstrings.
I walked over to her quickly before dropping to my knees in front of her and wrapping my arms around her tightly.
“Hey,” I said softly, pulling her close to my chest as she continued to sob into her hands.
“Let’s take some deep breaths together, okay?
I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, hoping that Mia would follow suit.
But as I felt her body continue to shake in my arms, I knew that this was far from over.
I pressed a kiss to her forehead before resting my chin on the top of her head and holding her close.
I didn’t know what had happened, but I knew that I needed to be here for her.
And that was exactly what I planned to do.
So I sat there with Mia for what felt like hours, holding her in my arms and trying to comfort her however I could.
She had stopped crying after a while, but she was still upset and I knew that this would be something that would take time for her to get over.
When she finally spoke, I was relieved that she was able to talk about it.
“I’m sorry for calling you,” she said.
“I just didn’t know who else to call.”
“You never have to apologize for calling me,” I replied softly.
“If you need me, I’ll always be here for you.”
