I had been sneaking out of the palace for years.
The first time I did it, I was only ten years old.
I had been playing in the garden when I heard the sound of a horse whinnying in the distance.
I ran to the wall and looked over it, and there he was: a handsome young man on a white horse, his dark hair blowing in the wind as he rode.
He was so handsome that I couldn’t help but stare at him, and when he looked up and saw me, I blushed and quickly ducked down behind the wall.
I waited for a moment, then peeked over the wall again, but he was gone.
I was disappointed that I hadn’t had a chance to talk to him, so I decided to take matters into my own hands.
That night, after my parents had put me to bed, I waited until I was sure they were asleep, then snuck out of my room and made my way to the garden.
I climbed up onto the wall and waited for the young man to ride by on his horse.
When he did, I called out to him.
“Who are you?”
I asked, trying to be brave.
“Just a traveler,” he said, “passing through on my way to Alderheim.”
I asked, and he chuckled.
“Not yet,” he said, “but maybe one day.”
We talked for a while, and when I heard the sound of footsteps approaching, I knew I had to go back to bed.
I jumped down from the wall and ran back to my room, hoping that no one had seen me.
And they hadn’t, not then.
But my parents found out soon enough that I had been sneaking out, and they made sure it wouldn’t happen again.
I was only ten years old when I first snuck out of the palace.
Now, five years later, I was hanging off the edge of a cliff, wondering how I had gotten myself into this mess.
I had always loved the thrill of danger and adventure, but this was ridiculous.
I was going to get myself killed if I wasn’t careful.
“Elara, please come back up here,” Marianna called, her voice tinged with worry.
“What’s the matter?”
I asked innocently.
“You’ve never been afraid of anything before.”
“That’s not true,” she said, “and besides, this is different.”
“How so?”
I asked as I pulled myself up onto the ledge, “It’s not like you haven’t seen me do this before.”
“I know,” she said as she helped me to my feet, her hands shaking slightly as she did so, “but you’re going to be queen someday.
You can’t keep sneaking out like this.”
“Oh, don’t be such a worrywart,” I said with a grin.
“We’re not even supposed to be going anywhere tonight.
We were just going to explore the dungeons and then go home.”
“Well, we should go home now,” Marianna said as she began to lead me away from the edge.
“My parents are going to be worried about me.”
“Don’t be silly,” I said as I pulled away from her grasp.
“They’ll just assume that I fell asleep in my room again.”
Which was true enough; I had done it many times before.
My parents were always so busy with their royal duties that they rarely had time for me.
They left me in the care of my servants, who did their best to keep me out of trouble, but it was no use.
I had a rebellious spirit, and no one could tame it.
Except for maybe Marianna.
She was my best friend and my most loyal servant, and she was the only one who could get me to do what she wanted.
“Please, Elara,” she begged, “let’s just go home.”
“Fine,” I said with a sigh, “but only because you’re scaring me.”
I could see the relief in her eyes as she led me back to the tunnel that would take us back to the palace.
I had gotten better at sneaking out over the years, but it was still a challenge.
The palace was heavily guarded, and I had to be careful not to be seen by anyone.
But it was worth it; there was nothing I loved more than exploring the world outside the palace walls.
My parents didn’t understand my need for adventure, but they didn’t have to; this was my life, and I would live it how I pleased.
“So, is this going to be the last time we sneak out?”
I asked as we made our way through the tunnel.
“Of course not,” she said with a laugh, “you know how much you love sneaking out.”
“That’s true,” I said with a grin, “but next time, we’ll have to be more careful about how we get back in.
I nearly broke my neck climbing up that cliff; it’s a wonder we didn’t get caught going through the front gate like that.”
“It is,” she agreed as she led me into the stables.
“Now let’s get you back to your room before anyone notices that you’re gone.”
We were almost at the palace entrance when we heard the sound of footsteps approaching.
“Quick,” Marianna hissed as she opened the door and pulled me inside, “hide in here.”
I ducked into a nearby room and watched as several guards walked by.
Once they were gone, I opened the door and stepped out into the hallway.
“That was too close,” she said as she led me to my room.
“You need to be more careful, Elara.
“I know,” I said with a sigh, “but what’s the fun in that?”
“There’s no fun in getting caught,” she replied.
“Now go on and get some sleep; your parents will be expecting you at breakfast.”
I nodded and went to bed, but I couldn’t sleep; my mind was still reeling from our adventure in the dungeons.
There were so many more places to explore down there, and we had only scratched the surface.
I couldn’t wait to go back and see what else we could find.
The next day, Marianna woke me up for breakfast just as she always did, but this time, she had a solemn look on her face.
“What’s wrong?”
I asked as I sat up in bed.
“We need to talk,” she said as she sat down beside me.
“It’s about last night.”
“What about it?”
I asked innocently, but she saw right through me.
“You know what I’m talking about,” she said sternly, “you can’t keep doing this, Elara. You’re a princess now; you have responsibilities to your kingdom.”
“I know that,” I said with a sigh.
“Then you need to start acting like one,” she said.
“The festival is in two days; you can’t be caught sneaking around the palace on that day of all days.
Your parents have worked hard to arrange this marriage for you; the last thing they need is for you to ruin it by being reckless and irresponsible.”
I rolled my eyes; I had heard it all before.
“But I don’t want to marry Prince Leopold; I barely even know him!”
“He’s a prince; that’s all that matters.
You need to do this for your kingdom.
They need an alliance with Alderheim if they want to survive the coming war.
You know this; why are you being so difficult about it?”
“I’m not being difficult,” I said as I got out of bed.
“I just don’t see why I have to marry someone I don’t love.
That’s not fair to either of us.”
“Well, life isn’t always fair,” Marianna said as she helped me get dressed.
“And besides, who says you won’t love him one day?
As soon as Marianna left to prepare breakfast, I sat down at my vanity and started brushing my hair, thinking about what she had just said.
The truth was, I didn’t know anything about Prince Leopold.
I’d never even met him before, and now I was expected to marry him?
It just didn’t seem right.
But what could I do?
I was just a princess; my parents made all the decisions for me.
There was nothing I could do to change their minds.
I sighed as I stared at my reflection in the mirror, wishing for a way out of this mess.
As soon as Marianna and I finished our breakfast, I told her to come with me to my chambers so we could talk about something important.
She was reluctant at first, but eventually she agreed.
I didn’t tell her what it was until we got there, and when I did, she looked at me like I was crazy.
“What are you thinking?”
she asked in disbelief as she paced back and forth across my room.
“We can’t just sneak out of the palace! What if we get caught?”
“We won’t get caught,” I said with a grin.
“How can you be so sure?”
she asked, still pacing back and forth.
“Because I’ve done this before,” I said matter-of-factly, “and I’ve never been caught yet.”
“But that was years ago,” she protested.
“And you were only a child; this is different!”
I rolled my eyes.
“You’re such a worrywart,” I said with a laugh as I walked over to her and put my hands on her shoulders to make her stop pacing.
“But don’t worry, I’ll be careful.”I could see the concern in her eyes, so I gave her my most convincing smile.
“Please, Marianna,” I begged as I pulled her into an embrace, “I promise nothing will happen to me.I’ll be fine.”She sighed and gave me a look that told me she thought I was crazy for even considering doing something like this, but eventually she relented and agreed to go with me.
We quickly packed a bag with some food, water, and blankets, and then set off for the town.Marianna insisted that we dress as commoners so no one would recognize us, and I happily obliged.
It had been years since I’d worn anything other than a dress, and it felt exhilarating to be out of my usual clothes, if only for a little while.
We kept our hoods up so no one would see our faces, and we walked quickly so we wouldn’t draw attention to ourselves.
I was grateful that Marianna had come with me; she always thought of everything.
As we walked through the town, I couldn’t help but be amazed by everything that we passed.
I’d never seen the town at night before, and it was like a whole new world had opened up before my very eyes.
The streets were crowded with people, and there were vendors selling food and trinkets on every corner.
There were even street performers entertaining the passersby with their music and dancing.
I had never seen anything like it before, and it was all so exciting.
We stopped at one of the food stands to get some dinner, and I was surprised by how much cheaper everything was compared to the food in the palace.
It was also much better; the meat pies they were selling were the best thing I’d ever tasted.
