The night was dark, the moon hidden behind the clouds.
The only sound that could be heard was the rustling of leaves as the wind blew through the trees.
I sat on a rock, my eyes scanning the area around me.
My heart was pounding in my chest, and I could feel my brother’s fear as he sat beside me.
We had been running for hours, and we were both exhausted.
But we couldn’t stop.
If we did, they would catch us.
And if they caught us, they would kill us.
I said to Najha in a low voice.
He nodded, his eyes scanning the area around us.
We had been on the run for days now, ever since the incident with Mwanaidi and Juba.
We had known that it was only a matter of time before they came for us, and so we had made our plans to leave.
But we hadn’t expected them to come so soon.
I said to Najha, my voice barely above a whisper.
He nodded, his eyes fixed on the small path that led out of the village and into the forest.
That was the way we had to go.
We had no other choice.
Najha stood up, and I followed him.
We were both tall and lean, with sharp features and dark eyes.
We were identical twins, with the same long black hair that we kept tied back in a braid.
We were best friends, and we had always done everything together.
And now, as we fled from our village in the dead of night, we were running for our lives together.
It had all started a few weeks ago, when Mwanaidi had come to our village.
She was beautiful, with long hair and a slender figure, and she had captured the hearts of all the men in the village, including Juba, the son of our King.
Juba was tall and strong, with broad shoulders and a commanding presence.
He was used to getting whatever he wanted, and when he saw Mwanaidi, he was determined to make her his bride.
But Mwanaidi had other ideas.
When Juba had come to her father’s house and asked for her hand in marriage, she had told him that she could never marry him.
For she was already in love with another man.
A man who was kind and gentle and treated her like a queen.
A man who made her feel like the most important person in the world.
She had told Juba that she would rather die than marry him, and Juba had been so enraged that he had slapped her across the face.
Najha and I had been passing by at that moment, and when we saw what Juba had done to Mwanaidi, we had rushed forward to help her.
But Juba was strong, and he had drawn his sword, ready to strike us down where we stood.
It was then that Mwanaidi had stepped forward and declared her love for me.
I could see the hurt in Juba’s eyes as he realized that the woman he desired loved another man.
And in that moment, I knew that there would be trouble.
I didn’t realize how much trouble until later that night, when Juba came to our home with a group of soldiers at his back, ready to take us down by force if necessary.
Najha and I were both warriors, but even we couldn’t take on a group of heavily armed soldiers by ourselves.
We knew that our only chance was to run.
And so we did.
Now we were hiding out in the forest, waiting for night to fall so that we could continue on our journey.
We had no plan, and no idea where we were going.
Our only hope was to reach one of the neighboring villages before they caught up to us.
But as we sat there in the darkness, listening to the sound of our pursuers in the distance, I knew that it wouldn’t be easy.

The night air was thick and humid, like a heavy blanket pressing down on us, making it hard to breathe.
I could feel the sweat soaking through my tunic, and I wiped my forehead with the back of my hand, leaving a trail of dirt and grime behind.
My legs ached, and I could feel blisters forming on my feet where the straps of my sandals rubbed against my skin.
I shifted uncomfortably on the hard ground, trying to find a more comfortable position, but it was no use.
I was too tense, too nervous, too scared to relax.
The memories of that fateful day were still fresh in my mind, and they haunted me like a ghost in the night, refusing to let me rest.
I could still see the look in Mwanaidi’s eyes as she had declared her love for me, and I could still hear the anger in Juba’s voice as he had demanded that I hand her over to him.
I had known then that things would turn violent, but I hadn’t realized how bad it would get.
I shuddered as I remembered the feel of my sword slicing through flesh and bone, the sound of Juba’s scream echoing in my ears as he fell to the ground, dead at my feet.
It had been a fight for our lives, a fight that neither Najha nor I had wanted to be a part of.
But in the end, there had been no other choice.
Juba had been determined to have his revenge, and there was nothing that I could do to stop him.
My heart pounded in my chest as I listened to the sound of footsteps behind us, growing closer and closer with each passing second.
They were following us, tracking our every move, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
I said to Najha, my voice barely above a whisper.
He nodded, his eyes scanning the area around us for any sign of movement.
And then, without a word, he stood up and started running, and I followed close behind him, the fear of capture giving me the strength I needed to keep going, even though every muscle in my body screamed for me to stop.
The night was our only ally, shrouded in darkness and hiding our movements from the eyes of those who pursued us.
But it was only a matter of time before they caught up, and when they did, they would show us no mercy.
Najha said, his voice tight with fear.
I said nothing in response, but I quickened my pace, knowing that we had no other choice but to run for our lives.
The footsteps grew closer and closer, and then suddenly, Najha stumbled over a tree root and fell forward onto the ground with a loud cry of pain that echoed through the night like a gunshot.

I turned back to help him up, but he pushed me away and started running again, the pain in his ankle forgotten as he raced through the forest, determined not to be left behind.
I followed close behind him, the moonlight shining down from above and providing me with some small measure of comfort as we continued our desperate flight through the trees.
But still they followed us, their footsteps growing louder and louder as they drew near.
They weren’t going to give up, not until they found us and made us pay for what we’d done.
Not until they’d killed us both and taken their revenge for Juba’s death.
I said to Najha, my heart pounding in my chest as I listened to the sound of their approach growing closer by the second.
He nodded grimly, knowing that he was right.
There was no way that we could outrun them forever, not when they knew these woods better than we did and not when there were so many of them searching for us at once.
Najha said, glancing back over his shoulder.
I shook my head in response.
There’s too many of them.
If we split up, they’ll catch us for sure.
I said to him, my voice tight with fear.
Najha said nothing in response, but he knew that I was right.
We were stronger together than we were apart, and if we had any chance of surviving this night, then we needed to stick together and help each other out in any way that we could.
But still the footsteps drew nearer, and then suddenly, we heard voices on all sides of us, and we knew that our pursuers had finally caught up with us at last.
We didn’t stop running, not until we saw the tree in front of us and realized that there was no other way to go.
And then, without another word, we started climbing as fast as we could go, our hands and feet scrabbling for purchase on the rough bark as we scaled the branches one by one.
It was a dangerous move and one that we had only chosen as a last resort.
But we had no other choice; the alternative was far worse than the risk of falling.
We climbed high into the tree until we were hidden from sight among the leaves and branches high above the ground below.
And then we waited in silence as the footsteps drew nearer and nearer with each passing second.
The moon had risen high into the sky by the time that the voices finally faded away into the distance, leaving us alone once more in the darkness below.
We stayed where we were for hours afterward, too afraid to move or make a sound in case someone heard us and came back to find us hiding in the trees.
It wasn’t until the sun began to rise that we dared to look down at the ground below and saw that there was no one there.
