I was walking through the forest, enjoying the peace and quiet.
The birds were singing, the sun was shining, and I had nothing to do but relax.
I’d been so busy lately that I hadn’t had time to come out here, and I’d missed it.
The forest was my favorite place in the world.
It was so beautiful and serene, and it always made me feel better when I was stressed out or upset.
I loved the way the sunlight filtered through the trees, dappling the ground with gold.
I loved the way the leaves rustled in the breeze, and the way the birds sang their sweet songs.
I loved everything about it, from the smell of pine needles to the sound of running water.
I’d been walking for about half an hour when I heard a strange noise up ahead.
It sounded like someone was crying, but I couldn’t see anyone around.
Curious, I followed the sound until I came to a small clearing in the trees.
I looked around, trying to figure out where the noise was coming from, when I saw something strange.
There was a tiny blue flame dancing in the air, flickering and swirling like a candle in the wind.
The flame was beautiful, but it was also a little bit scary.
I’d never seen anything like it before, and I didn’t know what to make of it.
I took a step closer, and the flame suddenly flared up, growing larger and brighter.
I took a step back, and the flame shrank down again, and started to dance once more.
It was like the flame was alive, reacting to my presence.
I watched it for a few minutes, fascinated by its movements.
I’d always been interested in magic, but I’d never seen anything quite like this before.
It was amazing, and a little bit terrifying.
I took another step closer, and the flame flared up again, growing so bright that I had to shield my eyes.
I took a step back, and the flame shrank down once more.
I could see now that it wasn’t just blue; there were streaks of purple and green in there, too.
The flame looked almost happy when I stepped closer, as if it wanted me to come closer.
It made no sense; flames weren’t alive—they didn’t have feelings or emotions.
But this one seemed different somehow.
It was so beautiful and mysterious that I couldn’t help but be drawn to it.
I was just about to take another step closer when I heard someone behind me say, “Don’t do that.”
I jumped, and spun around to see who had spoken.
A tall man with silver hair and piercing blue eyes was standing right behind me, looking at me with an expression of concern on his face.
I opened my mouth to ask him what he meant, but before I could say anything, he pointed at the flame behind me and said: “That’s an elemental.”
“I know what an elemental is,” I said indignantly.
An elemental was a manifestation of magic—a being or a creature created out of pure energy.
They were extremely rare, and very powerful.
This one was small—a lot smaller than the ones I’d heard about—but it was still an elemental nonetheless.
“Then you know that you shouldn’t go near it,” the man said.
“They can be dangerous.”
“I wasn’t going to touch it,” I said.
“I was just looking at it.”
“Well, stop,” he said.
“Just because you’re not touching it doesn’t mean you’re not putting yourself in danger.”
“You don’t have to tell me twice,” I muttered under my breath.
I turned back to look at the elemental one last time, then started to walk away.

The man fell into step beside me, glancing at the elemental over his shoulder as we walked away.
“You’re lucky you found that elemental,” he said after a moment.
“Most people go their whole lives without ever seeing one.”
“I know,” I said with a shrug.
“But it’s not like they’re all that interesting.”
“They’re interesting to mages,” he replied, raising an eyebrow at me as if to ask, don’t you want to be a mage?
I rolled my eyes, but didn’t say anything in response, because the truth was, he was right—I did want to be a mage, more than anything else in the world.
We walked in silence for a few moments, and then the man said: “My name is Lucas Thorne, by the way.”
“I’m Ethan Clarke,” I replied.
“It’s nice to meet you.”
He smiled, revealing perfect white teeth, and I felt my heart skip a beat as his eyes twinkled mischievously at me.
I was so lost in his gaze that I didn’t even notice that we had reached the edge of the forest until he took a step back and said: “Well, this is where I leave you.”
“Okay,” I said, feeling a little dazed by how quickly the time had passed since we’d met.
“Thanks for walking me home,” Lucas said, his smile widening as he turned to go.
I watched him go for a moment, then turned back to my house, feeling a little bit sad that our time together had come to an end so quickly.
I was so lost in thought that I didn’t notice the blue flame following me until I got all the way to my front door and turned around to close it behind me.
The flame was still there, flickering and swaying in the air as if begging me to let it in.
I hesitated for a moment, then opened the door just wide enough for me to slip through before closing it again behind me.
I stood in the hallway for a moment, listening for any sign of my parents before making my way up to my room to study in peace.
But when I got there, I found that it was impossible to concentrate on anything other than the blue flame still following me around like a lost puppy.
The flame was brighter now—more vivid than before—and seemed to be moving faster too; as if it were trying to get my attention or maybe even play a game with me.
It was impossible to say for sure, but one thing was certain: it was beautiful and mesmerizing to watch as it danced its delicate ballet just for me as if we were the only ones in the whole world watching its performance together.
As I watched, I realized that the flame was casting long shadows on the walls around me; shadows that seemed to be moving too—dancing along with the flame in an ethereal waltz of their own creation.

The flame seemed to sense my change in mood, as it moved even faster now, twirling and leaping like a gymnast on a balance beam.
And just when I thought it couldn’t get any more breathtaking, the flame flickered and grew smaller before leaping into the air in a graceful arc, leaving a trail of shimmering light behind it as it went.
I watched in awe as the flame twirled and spiraled through the air, leaving behind a trail of stardust that hung in the air like a nebulous cloud.
It was so beautiful that I felt like crying, but I knew that it would be impossible to describe something so magical to someone who hadn’t seen it for themselves.
As the last of the stardust dissipated into nothingness, I felt an empty ache in my chest.
The flame was gone now—or at least, it was nowhere to be seen—but I missed it terribly already.
The hallway seemed so quiet and lonely without it, as if it had somehow become my friend during the short time that we’d spent together.
I knew that it must sound crazy, but it was the only way I could describe how I felt about it.
My heart sank as I realized that I might never see it again, but then I heard a faint rustling sound behind me.
When I turned around, I saw that the blue flame was back, flickering just out of my reach.
It seemed almost to be taunting me now, as if it were daring me to try to catch it.
I hesitated for a moment, then remembered how frightened I’d been when we’d first met, how my heart had felt like it was about to burst out of my chest.
And yet, here I was now, laughing at the flame like an old friend—as if its dance had somehow helped to put me at ease.
I wasn’t sure how that had happened, but I was glad that it had; after all, what good was magic if it only scared you half to death?
Buoyed by this thought, I extended my hand for the second time that day, this time with a smile on my face.
The flame seemed to sense my change in mood too, as it stopped dead in its tracks before circling my fingers like a curious kitten exploring a new toy.
As it did so, I felt a warm tingling sensation shoot up my arm, making me shiver with delight from head to toe.
It was like nothing I’d ever experienced before, this strange rush of euphoria that seemed to come from deep inside of me instead of from anything external.
It was exhilarating, like riding on a rollercoaster or being in love for the first time.
More than anything else, it felt as though the flame were trying to tell me something—something important that I needed to understand—but what?
There was no way to say for sure.
All I knew is that this feeling made me feel more alive than I’d ever felt before.
As if in response to my unspoken question, the flame twirled around my head one more time, leaving another trail of shimmering light behind it as it went before disappearing into thin air once again.
As I watched it go, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace wash over me—an unshakeable certainty that everything would be okay in the end no matter what happened next.
