The forest was emptier than I remembered.
My footsteps crunched in the snow, the only sound that reached my ears.
I hadn’t been here in years now, not since I graduated from college and started my adult life.
But the moment I set foot on the well-trodden path between the trees, I felt as though I’d never left.
I was a child again, running around with Eeyore and Piglet and Winnie-the-Pooh.
I smiled at the thought of my long-lost friends.
I couldn’t wait to introduce them to Mary.
I’d told her about them, of course, but she’d never met them.
It would be just like old times.
Plus… it was the perfect place to pop the question.
I took Mary’s hand in mine, grinning at her.
She was a lot different than me, with long blonde hair and sky-blue eyes.
But she’d always accepted me for who I was, and that meant more to me than anything else in the world.
We were meant to be together.
“You’re not having second thoughts, are you?”
She grinned back at me.
“We’re going to be so happy together.”
She hugged me tightly, then slipped her hand into mine again.
“Now come on! Let’s go find your friends.”
We walked for a while, hand-in-hand, just enjoying each other’s company as we made our way through the forest.
I remembered it being a lot bigger when I was younger, but nothing ever looked the same as it did when you were a kid, did it?
We had to walk a long way before we got there, but it was worth it just to see Mary’s face light up when we stepped out of the trees and into the clearing.
I remember that feeling the first time I came back after so many years away.
It was like stepping into a different world, one that had never changed, even as I had grown up and left it behind.
The leaves were gone from the trees now, and everything was covered in a blanket of white snow, but it was still beautiful.
Mary squeezed my hand, as though she could read my thoughts.
“It’s so beautiful, Christopher.
You were so lucky to have grown up here.”
I smiled at her, hugging her close.
“Maybe our kids can grow up here, too,” I said.
“Wouldn’t that be amazing?”
She laughed, but I could tell that she liked the idea.
And why wouldn’t she?
This place was perfect.
Piglet came bursting out of the bushes, screaming in anger and hatred.
He leaped onto Mary and stabbed her over and over with his knife.
I let out a strangled cry, watching in shock as blood spewed everywhere.
Mary screamed, but it didn’t last long.
Piglet was vicious, and he didn’t stop stabbing her until she fell silent, her body limp and lifeless in his arms.
Christopher runs off and bumps into pooh and not knowing pooh is evil too he says "pooh you have to help me there's something wrong with piglet he just killed my fiancee"
Pooh stood there for a moment, staring down at Piglet as he dropped Mary’s body to the ground.
A single tear dripped from his eye, but he didn’t make a sound.
He didn’t even move as Christopher dragged him away, back through the trees to his little home in the woods.
It wasn’t far.
Pooh dragged me all the way to his little treehouse before he finally stopped moving.
He turned to Piglet, who had followed us in silence, dragging Mary’s body behind him.
“Burn it,” he said.
Piglet nodded silently, setting Mary’s body in one corner of the room before turning to Pooh once more.
“Come,” Pooh said to me, moving towards the ladder that led up to his bed.
I stared after him, not sure what to do until he waved me over impatiently.
I climbed up after him, not looking back at Piglet or Mary as they went about their work below.
When we were both settled in his little bed, Pooh turned to me, resting a paw on my chest.
“Do you remember what we promised, Christopher Robin?”
I nodded silently.
We hadn’t spoken in five years.
Pooh had made me promise not to speak again when we ate Eeyore.
It was him or us.
What else could we do?
We were starving.
But when we killed our dear friend and ate his flesh… that was the moment everything changed.
That was when we stopped being human and gave ourselves over to our feral instincts.
But even then, Pooh had still made me promise one more thing.
We’d never speak of what we’d done.
We’d never tell anyone what had happened.
And we’d never return to our old lives.
We’d return home to the woods and stay here forever.
To kill anyone that entered our territory.
We did as we promised.
We killed them all.
And we never spoke a word about it.
Not once in all these years had we broken our vow.
Not even now.
Pooh crawled out of bed and made his way down the ladder.
He paused for a moment as he looked down at Piglet and Mary, who were still hard at work below us.
Then he turned to me and nodded, waiting for me to follow him as he led me further into the woods.
It was dark now, but there was still enough light for us to find our way through the trees and bushes, following a well-worn path that only Pooh seemed able to see.
It wasn’t long before we reached our destination:
The little clearing where we had buried Eeyore all those years ago.
But now… it wasn’t so little anymore.
There were bones everywhere, sticking out of the snow like little white spikes.
Piglet had been busy all these years, killing everyone who entered our territory and adding their remains to our collection.
He dumped Mary’s body on top of the pile, then turned to Pooh, waiting for his next order.
Pooh pointed towards a tree, and Piglet nodded, getting to work without another word.
