I lay on the cold ground, staring up at the sky.
It was a deep shade of blue, almost black, and it seemed to me that it was deepening in color as I watched.
I was aware of a figure standing over me.
I tried to push myself up onto my elbows, but a sharp pain shot through my head and neck.
I fell back to the ground.
"Emily."
A familiar voice spoke above me.
"Mark."
My voice came out as a whisper.
I felt a hand slide under my neck, and then Mark’s face came into view.
He was kneeling next to me.
His dark hair looked black in the deepening light.
His eyes stared down at me, piercing and intense.
I was aware that my eyes must look the same.
I had experienced a change recently, one that allowed me to see the world in a new way.
"Can you sit up?"
Mark asked.
"I … I don’t know."
