I’d been with Michael for five years.
We met at college and had been inseparable ever since.
He was the love of my life, my best friend, and my soulmate.
I thought we were going to get married, have kids, and live happily ever after.
But I was wrong.
After college, Michael got a job at his father’s company, and I went to work for a nonprofit organization that helped underprivileged children.
Michael worked long hours, and when he wasn’t working, he was playing golf or hanging out with his friends.
We hardly saw each other, and when we did, we had nothing in common anymore.
I wanted to go out and have fun; he wanted to stay home and watch TV.
I wanted to travel the world; he wanted to save money and buy a house.
We were growing apart, and I knew it was time to end things.
It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I broke up with him.
He begged me to give him another chance, but I couldn’t do it.

I couldn’t keep pretending everything was fine.
So, here I was, sitting alone in my dimly lit apartment, surrounded by unpacked boxes and remnants of my life with Michael.
I clutched a photo of us from happier times, tears streaming down my face.
My phone buzzed incessantly on the coffee table.
I glanced at the screen.
Another message from Michael.
"Please, Emily. Just talk to me."
I turned the phone over, unable to bear reading another word.
The doorbell rang, breaking the silence.
I wiped my tears and took a deep breath before opening the door.
Sarah stood there, holding a bottle of wine and a bag of snacks.
"Hey," she said softly, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation.
"Hey," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
Sarah set the wine and snacks on the kitchen counter and pulled me into a tight hug.
"It’s going to be okay," she murmured into my hair.
I nodded against her shoulder, though I wasn’t sure I believed her.
We moved to the couch, and Sarah poured us each a generous glass of wine.

She handed me one and raised her own. "To new beginnings," she said with a small smile.
"To new beginnings," I echoed, clinking my glass against hers.
We sipped our wine in silence for a moment before Sarah spoke again.
"So, how are you holding up?"
I shrugged. "I don’t know. It’s hard. I miss him, but I know it was the right thing to do."
Sarah nodded. "Breakups are never easy. But you have to focus on yourself now."
"I know," I said, staring into my glass. "But he keeps texting me, begging for another chance. It’s so hard to ignore him."
"You have to be strong," Sarah said firmly. "He had his chance. Now it’s time for you to move forward."
"I guess," I sighed. "But what if I never find anyone else? What if I end up alone?"
Sarah shook her head. "You won’t. You’re amazing, Emily. And besides, being single isn’t the end of the world. It’s an opportunity to discover who you really are."
I smiled weakly. "Thanks, Sarah. I don’t know what I’d do without you."
"That’s what friends are for," she said with a wink. "And speaking of which, how about we go out tonight? A girls' night out could be just what you need."
I hesitated. "I don’t know if I’m ready for that."

"Come on," Sarah urged. "It’ll be fun! We can dance, have some drinks, and forget about all this for a while."
I bit my lip, considering her suggestion.
Maybe she was right.
Maybe a night out was exactly what I needed to start moving forward.
"Okay," I agreed finally. "Let’s do it."
Sarah grinned and jumped up from the couch. "Great! Let’s get ready!"
We spent the next hour getting dressed and doing our makeup.
For the first time in weeks, I felt a glimmer of excitement.
As we were about to leave, my phone buzzed again.
Instinctively, I reached for it but stopped myself.
No more distractions tonight.
We stepped out into the cool evening air and headed towards the downtown bars.
The city lights twinkled around us as we walked arm in arm.
Just as we were about to enter our favorite bar, someone called my name from behind.
I turned around and froze.
It was Michael.
His eyes were red-rimmed and desperate as he approached us.
"Emily, please," he pleaded. "Can we talk?"
My heart pounded in my chest as Sarah tightened her grip on my arm.
This was not how tonight was supposed to go.
