I was on a spaceship.
An alien spaceship.
And I was not alone.
I was with Jake Harrison, the astronaut who had been my friend since high school.
We were on a mission to Mars, and I had been so excited when I had been chosen to go along as the ship’s biologist.
It was a dream come true.
And then we had been taken.
We had been in our cryo-sleep pods, and then we weren’t.
I didn’t know what had woken me up, but I knew that something wasn’t right.
I could see the other pods, and they were empty.
The crew was gone.
Panic rose in my chest as I struggled to get out of my pod.
My fingers fumbled over the release mechanism, slick with sweat and trembling.
"Come on, come on," I muttered under my breath, my heart pounding in my ears.
With a hiss, the pod finally opened, and I tumbled out, landing awkwardly on the cold metal floor.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself as I got to my feet.
The corridor outside was dimly lit, shadows dancing eerily along the walls.
"Jake?" I called out, my voice echoing back at me.
Silence.
I took a hesitant step forward, then another, my eyes scanning the empty pods around me.
Where was everyone?
"Jake!" I shouted louder this time, desperation creeping into my voice.
A faint noise reached my ears—a soft groan coming from one of the pods at the far end of the room.
I rushed over, my footsteps echoing in the silence.
There he was—Jake, still inside his pod, unconscious but alive.
"Jake! Jake, wake up!" I banged on the glass cover of his pod, my hands shaking.
He didn't move.
"Please, Jake," I whispered, tears stinging my eyes as I fumbled with the controls to open his pod.
Finally, it clicked open with a soft whoosh.
I grabbed his shoulders and shook him hard.
"Jake! Come on, wake up!"
His eyelids fluttered, and he let out a low moan.
"Emily?" he mumbled, blinking up at me in confusion.
"Yes! It's me. We need to get out of here," I said urgently.
As he started to sit up, we both froze at the sound of footsteps approaching from down the corridor.
They were slow and deliberate, each step sending a chill down my spine.
"Someone's coming," Jake whispered, his eyes wide with fear.
We turned towards the door just as it slid open with a metallic hiss.
Emily's heart raced as she noticed a strange device in Lewis's hand.
Jake moved protectively in front of Emily, his fists clenched.
"Commander, what's going on?" he demanded.
Lewis ignored him, her gaze fixed on Emily.
"You shouldn't be here," she said flatly.
Emily's mind spun with confusion and dread.
Before she could respond, Lewis lunged forward, aiming the device at her.
Jake tackled Lewis to the ground, struggling to disarm her.
The device clattered to the floor, sliding across the metal surface.
"Emily, grab it!" Jake shouted through gritted teeth as he wrestled with Lewis.
I hesitated for a split second before diving for the device.
My fingers closed around its smooth surface just as Lewis managed to throw Jake off her.
She scrambled to her feet, her eyes blazing with anger.
"Give that back!" she snarled, advancing towards me.
I backed away, holding the device tightly against my chest.
"What is this? What are you doing?" I demanded, my voice shaking.
Lewis didn't answer; instead, she lunged at me again.
Jake intercepted her, grabbing her arm and twisting it behind her back.
"Emily, run!" he yelled.
I turned and sprinted down the corridor, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
The dim lighting cast eerie shadows on the walls as I ran, my footsteps echoing loudly in the silence.
Behind me, I could hear the sounds of struggle—grunts and thuds as Jake fought to keep Lewis restrained.
I rounded a corner and skidded to a halt in front of a door marked "Control Room."
With trembling hands, I punched in the access code and the door slid open with a soft hiss.
I darted inside and slammed my hand on the control panel to lock the door behind me.
The control room was dimly lit by the glow of various screens and monitors displaying data I couldn't understand.
I glanced around frantically, trying to figure out what to do next.
The device in my hand felt heavy and foreign.
What was it for?
Why had Lewis been so desperate to use it on me?
A loud bang on the door made me jump.
"Emily! Open up!" It was Jake's voice, urgent and strained.
I rushed to the door and unlocked it just as Jake stumbled inside, panting heavily.
He quickly locked it again behind him.
"Are you okay?" he asked between breaths.
"I think so," I replied shakily. "What about you?"
"I'll live," he said grimly. "But we need to figure out what's going on."
I nodded, my mind racing.
"We need answers. Maybe there's something in here that can help us."
We began searching through the control room, rifling through drawers and scanning screens for any clue that might explain our situation.
"Look at this," Jake said suddenly, pointing to a monitor displaying a series of logs.
I peered over his shoulder and read aloud: "Experiment 47: Subject Emily Carter. Status: Active."
My blood ran cold. "Experiment? What does that mean?"
Jake's face was pale. "I don't know, but it can't be good."
Before we could delve deeper into the logs, an alarm blared through the ship. Red lights flashed ominously around us.
"We need to move," Jake said urgently. "They're onto us."
We grabbed what we could from the control room—data chips, printouts—and bolted out into the corridor once more.
As we ran through the maze-like corridors of the alien ship, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched. Every shadow seemed to hide a threat; every sound made my heart race faster.
We rounded another corner and came face-to-face with a group of armed guards blocking our path.
"Stop right there!" one of them barked.
Jake raised his hands slowly. "We don't want any trouble. We just want answers."
The guard sneered. "You're not getting any answers. Surrender now or face the consequences."
