Chapter 1
The alarm went off in the middle of the night.
I was sleeping soundly, but I woke up immediately.
I sat up and looked at the screen on the wall.
It was a warning from the Starlink constellation.
An unauthorized vessel had entered Low Earth Orbit.
This was my job as a guardian, so I didn’t think too much about it.
I quickly put on my uniform and rushed to the command center.
"Sarah, what’s going on?"
I asked our tech support when I arrived at the command center.
Sarah Jennings was sitting in front of a computer, typing on the keyboard frantically.
She had bright red hair and freckles all over her face, which made her look like a cute little fox.
But she was one of the smartest people I knew, and she could hack into any system in less than five minutes if she wanted to.
"We’re under attack," she said without looking up from her computer screen.
"What do you mean we’re under attack?"
I asked in disbelief.
"Mr. X," she said, looking into my eyes with a serious expression.
"His company, Nemesis, is coming after us."
"I’ve warned you about this before," she continued.
"But you didn’t listen to me."
"What’s happening right now?"
I asked in a hurry.
She took a deep breath and turned the computer screen towards me.
The Starlink constellation was under attack by another vessel that had attached itself to it.
"Whoever this is, they’ve managed to hack into our system using some kind of backdoor that I missed during my security checks," Sarah explained quickly.
"They’ve taken control of our defense satellites and disabled all of our weapons."
"This is bad," I said to her, already knowing that there was nothing we could do to save ourselves at this point.
"I think we can disable them," Sarah said with a confident expression on her face.
"But we need to act fast."
"If we try to fight them off, we might destroy the whole space station in the process. There’s also a chance that some debris could fall down to Earth and cause casualties." "Heads up!" she warned out of nowhere just as I saw another group approaching on the radar display behind me.
I turned around and saw an unidentified vessel coming towards us at full speed.
"They’re too fast," she said.
"They’ll be here in less than a minute."
I gulped and watched helplessly as the enemy vessel docked with our space station.
The enemy team came aboard the space station and started attacking my people right away.
We were trying to fight back, but they had more advanced weapons than us, and there were too many of them.
They took down most of my men in less than five minutes.
"They must’ve been using some kind of stealth technology," Sarah said to me.
"We didn’t see them coming at all."
I could only watch helplessly as they infiltrated our systems one by one and took control of everything we had built over the years.
They had caught us by surprise—nobody would expect them to come after us like this.
