I was going to make it big.
I was going to be a famous drummer.
I was going to make it happen, no matter what.
The four of us—myself, Ben, Matt, and Chris—had been best friends since we were kids, and we had formed a band.
We had been playing music together for years.
And I knew that I was good.
Damn good.
The others were too.
We all played off each other in a way that was hard to explain.
But when we got together to jam, it just clicked.
We were destined for stardom, I could feel it.
And I wasn’t giving up on my dreams.
"Rachel, I’m so sorry," I said again, taking her hands in mine.
"I know I haven’t been around much lately. But I promise you, it’s all going to be worth it. Just a little longer, and we’re going to make it. We’re going to be famous."
Rachel looked at me with her big blue eyes, and I could see the doubt there.
I knew she wanted to believe me, but she had heard all of this before.
I could feel her patience wearing thin.
"I’m sorry," I said again.
We were sitting on the couch in her parents’ house, where she still lived.
We had met in high school and had been together ever since.
I reached up and brushed a lock of her blonde hair behind her ear.

I pulled my gaze away from hers and stood up from the worn leather couch.
I extended my hand to her, and she looked at it for a moment before taking it.
The late afternoon sun was streaming through the living room windows, casting long shadows across the carpet.
Rachel stood up, and I could see the tension in her shoulders.
"I was thinking we could go get some coffee," I said.
"There’s a new place down by the pier that I’ve been wanting to check out."
She nodded slightly, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her sweater.
"Okay," she said quietly.
We walked over to the coat rack by the front door and grabbed our light jackets.
It was early fall, and the weather was still warm but had a crispness to it that made me want to wrap my arms around Rachel and pull her close.
Drumming Up Love
I held open the door for her, and we stepped out onto the front porch.
As we walked down the steps, I realized that this was my chance to prove that I could be there for her, no matter what.
At the coffee shop, we sat at a small table by the window.
The pier stretched out into the water, and I could see people walking along the beach.
Rachel stirred her latte without looking up at me.
I reached across the table and took her hand.
"Rachel, you mean everything to me," I said softly.
She looked up at me, her eyes searching my face.
"I know," she said quietly.
"I just don’t want to lose you."
"You won’t," I promised.
"We’ll make this work. I promise."
Drumming Up Love
She nodded slightly, her fingers intertwining with mine.
We sat there for a long time, watching the sun set over the water.
We talked about everything and nothing, our conversation flowing easily.
The coffee grew cold in our cups, but neither of us seemed to notice.
As the stars began to twinkle overhead, I knew that things were going to be okay between us.
I could feel it in my bones. "I miss these quiet moments with you," Rachel said softly, breaking into my thoughts.
I smiled at her, feeling a warmth spread through my chest.
"Me too," I replied.
"Maybe we should go back to my place."
She hesitated for a moment before nodding slowly.
Drumming Up Love
"Okay," she said quietly.
We stood up and walked out of the coffee shop, our shoulders brushing together as we strolled along the pier.
The future felt uncertain, but as we walked side by side, I knew we were ready to face it together.
