The forest was quiet.

A soft breeze rustled the silver leaves of the birch trees, and a few birds sang their morning songs.

But otherwise, it was still and peaceful, as if the very woods were holding their breath in anticipation.

Waiting.I stood in front of the ancient tree, staring up at its gnarled trunk.

I’d dreamed of this moment my whole life.

Literally.

From the time I was a little girl to the present, I’d had recurring dreams of standing right here, in this spot, calling my spirit beast.

And finally, the day had arrived.

"Are you sure you’re ready?"

Jaxon asked from behind me.

I turned to him.

He was entirely unimpressed with the situation, despite the fact that he’d been training me for the last year.

He was ready to call his own beast whenever he wanted, but he’d been waiting for me.

Ready to be my protector until I could protect myself.

"I’m sure."

I glanced over at Lila, who sat cross-legged on the ground just outside of the clearing.

She had her hands clasped together in front of her knees and was staring at me intently.

"What do I do?"
