I was never one to turn down a first date, especially not when the guy was as cheeky and charming as Max.
When we made plans to meet at the local coffee shop on Saturday, I couldn’t wait.
I’d never been one to get all worked up over a guy, but there was something about Max that had me curious.
He was forward, but not too pushy.
And our conversations had always left me smiling long after the chat was over.
So when he asked me out on a date, I said yes immediately.
I’d never been one to think I’d be the type of guy to get all fluttery inside over a boy, but there was something about Max that had me all a-flutter.
I didn’t even know what he looked like, but I was excited to find out.
"Hey," he said as he slid into the booth across from me.
"I’m sorry I’m late."
"You’re not."
I smiled at him, taking in his features for the first time.
He was hot.
Like, really hot.
His dark hair was messy, like he’d just rolled out of bed, and his hazel eyes were rimmed with gold.
His face was sharp, but not unkind, and his lips were plump and inviting.
"You look great," I said, feeling a little starstruck.
"Thanks," he grinned, showing off his perfect teeth.
"So do you."
I noticed that he was shifting around in his seat, almost like he was uncomfortable.
His movements were a little stiff, and he kept fidgeting with the tablecloth.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes, either, and I couldn’t help but wonder what was going on.
Was he nervous?
Was there something wrong?
When he reached for his coffee, his shirt rode up a little bit, and I could have sworn I saw an extra waistband peeking out from underneath.
I leaned forward, squinting to get a better look.
Was I seeing things?
Max caught me staring and his face turned bright red.
He cleared his throat and glanced around the coffee shop, which was nearly empty.
Double Trouble
"Um," he said, his voice shaking a little bit.
"I think we should talk."
"Sure," I said, trying to sound calm.
"What’s up?"
Max took a deep breath and then reached down to unbutton his jacket.
Double Trouble
He led me to a more private corner of the cafe, away from prying eyes.
His movements were stiff and deliberate, like he was trying to control every twitch of his muscles.
I followed him, my heart pounding in my chest.
As he removed his jacket, I could see that his shirt was loose-fitting, but there was still an unusual bulge underneath.
I couldn’t help but stare at it, wondering what it was.
Max seemed to sense my gaze and cleared his throat again.
"Um," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"I have something to show you."
He lifted the hem of his shirt slowly, revealing a smooth expanse of skin underneath.
But then, as he pulled the fabric higher, I saw something that made my heart skip a beat.
Double Trouble
There, extending from his spine, was a second pair of legs.
I leaned forward, my coffee forgotten on the table behind me.
Max didn’t say anything for a long moment; he just let me stare at him in shock. Finally, he spoke up again, his voice quiet and hesitant.
"I know this is a lot to take in," he said.
"But I wanted to be honest with you. I didn’t want to hide this from you."
I didn’t know what to say.
I had never seen anything like this before.
It was both fascinating and terrifying at the same time.
I felt like I should be repulsed by it, but instead, I found myself wanting to reach out and touch it.
Max must have sensed my curiosity because he nodded slightly and said, "You can touch it if you want."
I hesitated for a moment before reaching out and gently running my fingers over the smooth skin of his extra limbs.
They felt surprisingly soft and warm under my touch, almost like they were alive. As I explored them further, I noticed that they were covered in tiny hairs, just like the rest of Max’s body.
It was strange to see them growing out of his back like that, but at the same time, it felt strangely natural too. Just then, a waitress came over to our table to refill our cups with fresh coffee.
Max quickly dropped his shirt back down over his extra limbs and grabbed my hand under the table.
"Listen," he whispered urgently, "I know this is a lot, but I really like you and I hope this doesn’t change anything between us."
I squeezed his hand reassuringly, trying to process everything.
"It’s definitely unexpected," I admitted, "but I’m not going anywhere."
