The donut killed me.
I mean, I should’ve known better than to try to catch a giant rolling donut in an alleyway.
It was just sitting there, all alone and abandoned, so I figured why not?
Then it rolled away at the perfect speed to give me a concussion and kill me.
Or maybe it was the giant pastry bag that swung down from the rooftops and knocked my head into next week.
Either way I died.
I was quite vexed about it too.
I had just gotten my first apartment, started reading through all the books I’d been putting off, and finally gotten around to learning how to cook.
Now none of that mattered.
I was dead.
At least I got to eat that donut before I died.
It was delicious.
That was what really cheesed me off.
I blinked.
The light was so bright I could barely see.
I was lying on my back, and the sun was filtering through the leaves of trees above me.
I sat up, looking around at the forest.
It was a lot more lush than I’d expected.
I had been in the city for so long I’d forgotten what real trees looked like.
"Welcome to your new life, donut hero!"
A cheerful voice called out from behind me.
I turned to see a cartoon character floating in the air.
He had a big smile on his face and a goofy expression.
He was wearing a hat that looked like a miniature top hat, and he had a little mustache that curled up at the ends.
He looked like he should be holding a cane and talking with an accent, but he wasn’t.
Instead he was just floating there, looking at me expectantly.
"Who are you?"
I asked him.
"My name is Toonie. And you are Jack."
He said, grinning at me.
"I died."
I said, trying to remember how I’d gotten here.
"You did. But you got reincarnated into this world. It’s a fantasy realm. There are magic and monsters here. You’re going to have to get used to it."
Toonie said, still smiling at me.
"What do you mean?"
I asked him, standing up and dusting myself off.
"You’re not in the city anymore. You’re not even in the same world anymore. You’re in a different dimension."
Toonie said, still grinning at me.
"Is this some kind of joke?"
I asked him, looking around at the forest again.
"Nope. You’re dead. You got reincarnated into this world. You’re going to have to get used to it."
Toonie said again, still smiling at me.
"Why are you smiling?"
I asked him, annoyed by his constant cheerfulness.
"I’m just happy to see you! You’re my first client!"
Toonie said, still grinning at me.
"What do you mean?"
I asked him, confused by his words.
"I’m your guide. I’m here to help you navigate this world. I’m also your friend."
Toonie said, still smiling at me.
"What about my powers? What can I do now?"
I asked him, looking down at my hands in confusion.
"You have powers now? That’s news to me."
Toonie said, looking surprised by my words.
"Well, you will soon," he added with a wink.
Just then, a shadow loomed over us, and the ground began to tremble.
"Uh-oh," Toonie muttered, glancing nervously at the sky, "I wasn't expecting them to find you so quickly."
I froze.
Toonie did the same.
The shadow grew larger and larger until it was impossible to ignore.
Then a massive creature burst through the trees, sending branches flying everywhere.
It was an ogre, easily twice my height, with skin like a potato and eyes that were too small for its head.
It had giant teeth and a club in one hand.
It looked at me and then at Toonie.
Then it charged towards me.
"Looks like your first challenge, Jack!"
Toonie said, giggling nervously.
I hear a voice In my head as a Stat sheet appears in front of me
I couldn’t quite place it, but it felt like my limbs were growing longer.
I looked down and saw that they were.
The toon system was activating, I guessed.
My arms were stretching out like rubber bands, allowing me to dodge the ogre’s clumsy swings with ease.
I didn’t know what to do, so I just stood there with my elongated arms and watched as the ogre swung at me over and over again.
Then a girl came out of nowhere, her sword flashing in the sunlight as she sliced at the ogre’s legs.
It howled in pain and stumbled backwards, giving her an opening to strike its neck.
She took advantage of it immediately, swinging her sword in powerful arcs until the ogre fell to the ground dead.
She turned to me then and smiled.
"Thanks for distracting him."
"No problem," I said back, still feeling confused about what was happening to my body. "You’re welcome," Toonie said from behind me.
I turned to look at him and saw that he was still floating there, grinning at me like a fool.
"What’s going on?"
I asked him.
"I told you. You have powers now."
"What kind of powers?"
"The kind that let you stretch your arms really far."
He said, giggling again.
"That’s not very helpful."
"Oh well. You’ll figure it out eventually. Just play around with your body until you get the hang of it."
I looked down at my body again and saw that my arms had returned to normal size.
I reached out a hand and stretched it as far as I could, but it only went about a foot before stopping abruptly.
"See?"?
Toonie said when he saw what I was doing.
"It’s not working."
"Oh well," he shrugged again.
"You’ll figure it out eventually."
The girl sheathed her sword and approached, her eyes scanning me with curiosity.
"You're new here, aren't you?" she asked, extending a hand.
Before I could respond, the ground beneath us cracked open, revealing a swirling vortex of light and shadow.
I nodded, still trying to wrap my head around everything.
"Jack," I said, shaking her hand.
"Lily," she replied.
Just then, a swirling vortex opened up behind us, and we all turned to look.
The air was shimmering with a rainbow of colors, and it looked like you could reach out and touch it.
It was so close that I could feel the heat coming off of it.
It was like standing next to a fire.
Then a giant donut emerged from the center of the vortex, spinning around in circles as it sang a catchy tune about friendship.
Toonie started bouncing up and down excitedly, humming along with the donut’s melody.
I was still trying to get used to my stretchy arms, so I wasn’t paying attention when Lily grabbed my hand and pulled me back from the edge of the vortex.
The donut’s surface glistened in the sunlight, looking like it was covered in sugar.
Lily didn’t seem surprised by any of this.
She just drew her sword again and stood at the ready, waiting for whatever came out of the hole next.
The donut’s song grew louder and louder until it was almost deafening.
I could feel its rhythm in my chest. Then a giant pastry bag came flying out of the hole, chasing after the donut as it danced through the air.
It swung back and forth, narrowly missing the donut each time.
The donut giggled and spun around even faster, dodging the bag with ease.
Toonie was laughing now too, clapping his hands together as he cheered on the donut.
The vortex closed with a snap, leaving us in stunned silence.
