Dear Diary,
Today was a pretty OK day.
The only bad thing that happened was when I was getting ready for school, I tried to squeeze the last bit of toothpaste out of the tube and it squirted all over my reflection in the bathroom mirror.
I didn’t know what to do, so I just stood there staring at my toothpastecovered reflection, watching as it oozed down the glass front of the bathroom cabinet.
But besides that one incident, the rest of my day went pretty smoothly.
I think I’m starting to get used to middle school.
Rowley and I are becoming pretty good friends.
He’s a lot different than Chito or Fregley, my two old best friends from elementary school.
Rowley is super nice and honest, which can be kind of a bad thing.
Like yesterday, Rowley’s mom sent a humongous box of candy to school for Rowley to pass out to his friends, because today is his birthday.
When Rowley gave me my piece of candy, I told him I didn’t like peach flavor and he believed me.
So he gave me a different piece!

I think Rowley is the only person I know who would fall for that.
When I woke up this morning, I heard music blasting from Rodrick’s room.
I didn’t even have to get out of bed to know it was Rodrick’s music, because it was so loud it was rattling the windows.
I got dressed and went downstairs to eat breakfast.
I had a bowl of cereal and then grabbed my backpack and headed out the door.
I had a math exam first period, and I was a little nervous about it.
I don’t really like exams, but I especially don’t like math exams.
When I got to class, Rowley was already there, sitting in his seat and tapping his pencil on his desk.
I sat down next to him and said hi.
Then our teacher, Mrs. Morgan, came in and handed out the test papers.
As she was handing them out, I glanced around the room and saw some kids whispering to each other.
I think they were cheating off of each other or something.

I felt my heart start beating fast because I realized I hadn’t studied enough for the exam.
So when Mrs. Morgan said we could start, I looked over at Rowley’s paper and copied all of his answers onto my paper. When I finished copying, I looked up and saw Mrs. Morgan walking by my desk.
She gave me a weird look, like she knew what I was doing or something.
"Hey, Greg," Rowley whispered, leaning over, "did you get stuck on question five too?"
I nodded, trying to act casual. "Uh, yeah, but I figured it out after a while."
Rowley grinned sheepishly. "Good thing Mrs. Morgan didn't see us talking; she might've thought we were cheating or something."

I laughed nervously.
"Yeah, that would be bad."
Then the bell rang, signaling the end of the period.
I let out a huge sigh of relief and started packing up my stuff.
Rowley and I exchanged a look, both of us thinking the same thing: We got away with it!
We were about to stand up when Mrs. Morgan called out from the front of the room.
"Greg Heffley and Rowley Jefferson, please stay after class."
My heart stopped.
Rowley and I looked at each other and shrugged.
I had no idea what Mrs. Morgan wanted to talk to us about.
Maybe she was going to give us some extra credit or something?
But then I remembered how suspiciously she had looked at me earlier, and I started to get really nervous.

Rowley and I sat back down in our seats and waited for everyone else to leave.
When the room was empty except for us, Mrs. Morgan walked over to our desks.
She had her arms crossed and was holding our test papers in one hand. "Boys," she said sternly, "I’d like to talk to you about your exam answers."
Oh no, I thought.
She knows!
My mind started racing as I tried to think of an excuse.
But before I could come up with anything, Mrs. Morgan spoke again.
"Greg," she said, pointing her finger at me, "and Rowley, why do you both have exactly the same answers on your papers?"
Rowley looked confused.
He glanced over at me like he was waiting for me to answer Mrs. Morgan’s question.
But I didn’t know what to say!
Mrs. Morgan narrowed her eyes at us.
"I don’t want any funny business in my classroom," she said sternly.

She tapped her pen on the desk and waited for one of us to speak up.
I glanced over at Rowley, but he still looked clueless.
"Uh, well," I started, trying to sound confident, "we simply have the same answer."
Mrs. Morgan raised an eyebrow.
I could tell she didn’t believe me.
Rowley nodded his head enthusiastically like he thought I had just solved the whole problem.
"Right, Greg," he said with a grin, "great minds think alike!"
Mrs. Morgan sighed and scribbled something on a notepad.
Then she ripped off two pieces of paper and handed them to us.
"Detention," she said sternly.
Rowley and I got up and walked out of the classroom together.
As we were walking down the hallway, Rowley whispered to me, "Thanks, Greg."

I didn’t know what to say to him.

He was still thanking me, even though we had just gotten in trouble.
I smirked to myself as I looked over at him.
Rowley was so clueless.
"Next time, let’s cheat more cleverly," I whispered back to him.
Rowley nodded his head like he thought that was a great idea.
We walked down the hallway and turned the corner, heading towards the detention room.
As we were walking, I saw Rodrick leaning against his locker.
He was smirking at us like he knew what had happened.
I gave him a little nod, and he winked back at me.
I guess he’s been in situations like this before too.
