It had been years since I underwent the inspection.
I still couldn’t figure out how to get out of it.
The worst thing in my life had happened, and I didn’t know how to make it right.
I did everything I could, but nothing worked.
I was running out of ideas.
I tried my best, but I felt powerless.
The more I struggled, the more I felt trapped.
I was at a loss as to what to do next.
The only thing I could do was wait and see what would happen.
Waiting was hard for me.
I wasn’t used to waiting; I was used to doing something.
But there was nothing I could do.
All I could do was sit and wait for something to happen.
It was a hard feeling to get used to.
I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it.
It was not in my nature.
I had always been a person who did things, not one who waited for them to happen.
I didn’t know how I would be able to do it.
It was something I would have to learn.
Determined to Be Heard
I pace back and forth in my living room, staring at the number on my phone screen.
Marco was always the most level-headed person at work, even when everything was going wrong.
My thumb hovers over the call button for several minutes before I finally press it.
The phone rings three times before he answers.
"Hello?"
His voice is familiar, cautious but not unfriendly.
"Hi, Marco."
I try to sound calm, but my voice comes out shaky.
"Hi. How are you?"
"I’m good. I just wanted to ask you something."
Determined to Be Heard
"Okay. What’s up?"
I take a deep breath and try to explain, but the words come out in a rush of fragments.
"I need to know if there’s a way to get out of the inspection. I know it’s not supposed to happen, but it did. And now I don’t know what to do."
There’s a long pause on the other end of the line.
"I’m sorry," he says finally.
"I don’t understand what you’re talking about."
"The inspection," I repeat.
"I went through it. And now I don’t know how to get out of it."
There’s another pause.
"I don’t know what you mean," he says slowly.
"The inspection is a legal process. It’s not something you can just get out of." "I know," I say, feeling frustrated.
"But there has to be a way. I didn’t do anything wrong. I just want to make things right."
There’s another long pause.
"I’m sorry," he says finally.
"But I don’t think there’s anything you can do. The inspection is a legal process. It’s not something you can just get out of."
I feel a lump form in my throat as I realize that he’s right.
There’s nothing I can do.
The inspection is a legal process, and there’s no way to get out of it.
I thank him for his time and hang up the phone, feeling defeated and helpless.
I sit down on the couch and stare at the wall, trying to figure out what to do next.
But there’s nothing I can do.
All I can do is wait and see what happens next. "What do you mean?"
I ask him, my voice shaking slightly as I try to understand what he is saying.
"The inspection isn’t just about finding problems," he explains patiently.
"It’s about ensuring everything is in order, and sometimes that means facing things we’d rather avoid."
Determined to Be Heard
"But what if I didn’t even know there was something to face?" I ask, desperation creeping into my voice.
"Then maybe it’s time to uncover what’s been hidden," Marco replies gently, "because only then can you truly move forward."
After the call, I sit at my kitchen table, staring at the stack of inspection documents I’ve accumulated over the years.
The manila folders are worn at the edges from countless readings.
I pull out the first report, dated three years ago, and start making detailed notes on each finding.
My hands tremble as I write, remembering the day the inspectors first walked into my office.
The methodology section catches my attention - there’s something about the sampling process that doesn’t add up.
Determined to Be Heard
I grab my phone and call Marco again, urgency in my voice.
"Marco, I think I found something in the reports that doesn’t make sense."
"What do you mean?" he asks, sounding intrigued.
