Chapter 1
I was in detention.
Again.
This time, I wasn’t alone.
Desiree Montgomery sat in the desk next to mine, her head down and her hair covering her face.
She was a goth, but she never got in trouble at school.
She was my best friend, and I’d been trying to get her to tell me what she did after school that kept her out of detention all these years.
I’d finally found out.
She was a demonvampire hybrid, and she was going to kill me.
I’d known Desiree since we were kids, and I’d always had a crush on her.
She was beautiful, with long black hair and big blue eyes that sparkled when she smiled.
She was also smart and funny and kind, and I loved spending time with her.
So when she started acting weird at the beginning of the school year, I didn’t know what to do.
I tried talking to her about it, but she wouldn’t listen.
I tried going along with it and pretending like everything was fine, but I couldn’t keep up the act for long.
After a few weeks, I started avoiding her.
It wasn’t easy; we had almost every class together, and we’d been hanging out after school for hours every day since we were kids.
But I managed it for a while, keeping my head down and trying to stay out of her way as much as possible.
She never said anything about it, which just made me more paranoid that something was seriously wrong with her.
I kept waiting for her to snap or do something crazy or mean, but she never did.
No matter how hard I tried to convince myself otherwise, the truth was that Desiree had never done anything to hurt me before in all the years we’d been friends.
She’d always been there for me when I needed her and had my back when things got tough, even if I didn’t want to admit it at the time.
So why would she start now?
It didn’t make any sense, but nothing seemed to add up anymore when it came to her.
As if on cue, Desiree shifted in the seat next to mine, and a flicker of movement caught my eye as her hair fell away from her face.
Her eyes were closed, but I could just barely see one of them through the thick curtain of black hair that framed her pale skin like an inky halo.
