I was born with pale pink hair and yellow eyes.
Yes, you read that correctly, yellow eyes.
Not light brown, not dark green, but yellow.
Like the color of lemons, canary birds, and daffodils.
My eyes were yellow and that made me special.
But being special wasn’t always a good thing.
Sometimes it made me feel like a freak.
Sometimes it made me feel like I didn’t belong.
So I did my best to ignore it, to ignore how different I was from everyone else.
To ignore the whispers and pointing fingers of the other kids when I was in school.
To ignore the looks of disgust and fear from some of my coworkers now.
But there was one place where I could truly be myself, where being different didn’t matter, where I could let go of all my worries and troubles.
I park my car in the secluded cove, my usual spot where I can be alone and out of sight from prying eyes.
The path leading down to the water is rocky and uneven, but I know it well.
I’ve been here countless times before, always coming back to this place for solace and peace.
As I make my way down the winding path, I notice something moving near the shoreline.
At first, I think it might be a bird or some other animal, but then I see a figure emerge from behind the rocks.
It’s a girl with long red hair that cascades down her back like a waterfall of fire.
She turns towards me and I freeze in my tracks, unsure of what to do next.
Her eyes meet mine and I’m struck by their intensity.
They’re red, bright and bold like garnets catching the sunlight.
I’ve never seen anything like it before. Neither of us says a word for a moment, just standing there staring at each other.
Deep love
She’s as naked as I planned to be, water droplets trailing down her pale skin and glistening in the sunlight.
But she doesn’t seem embarrassed or self-conscious about it at all.
Instead, she smiles at me, a confident grin that shows no hint of surprise or judgment.
And then she raises her hand in greeting, beckoning me closer.
"You're not the only one with unusual eyes," she says, her voice as smooth as the water lapping at the shore.
Deep love
I hesitate, then ask, "Do you come here often?"
"Only when I need to remember who I really am," she replies, her gaze unwavering.
My heart races as I study her extended hand, noticing the delicate webbing between her fingers that matches my own.
The setting sun casts an ethereal glow on her wet skin, making her red hair shimmer like liquid fire.
She maintains that confident smile, patient and unwavering, as I take hesitant steps towards her through the shallow water.
The gentle waves lap at my ankles, then my knees, as I draw closer.
When I finally reach for her hand, her fingers interlock with mine naturally, as if we've done this countless times before.
Deep love
"Do you feel it too?" she asks, her voice barely above a whisper, yet it resonates within me.
"Yes," I reply, the word escaping before I can fully comprehend its weight.
"We're not alone," she says, her eyes searching mine for understanding, "there are others like us."
Still holding hands, we wade deeper into the water.
She guides me towards a cluster of jagged rocks jutting from the sea.
The setting sun casts long shadows across the water's surface, making the cave entrance barely visible between two towering boulders.
My webbed fingers tighten around hers as we swim closer, our naked bodies gliding effortlessly through the cool waves.
The cave mouth looms before us, dark and mysterious.
Deep love
Eryn's red hair flows behind her like flames underwater as she pauses, turning to face me.
Her garnet eyes seem to glow as she squeezes my hand three times - a silent signal.
