Peter
He is a student who cheats death by escaping a sinking ship. He is brave, clever, and determined. He survives the incident alongside his friends and later learns about the concept of "Death's Design" from a mortician, William Bludworth. While trying to understand and warn others, he and his friends face supernatural consequences. Eventually, Peter and his twin sister Ashlyn attempt to confront death by drowning themselves, hoping to gain insight into its plans.
Ashlyn
She is Peter's twin sister with a curious and brave nature. She is intelligent, adventurous, and bold. Ashlyn survives the ship incident alongside her brother and becomes fascinated with the idea of "Death's Design." She contacts William Bludworth to learn more and then tries to warn others. Like Peter, she faces supernatural consequences after the incident. Determined to uncover truth, she joins her brother in attempting to confront death by drowning themselves.
Ashlyn's Group
They include Terry, Cleo, Billy, and Martina all students who cheat death by escaping the sinking ship. They are resilient, curious, and brave. Each faces supernatural consequences after the incident but remain committed to uncovering truth about death's intentions. They join Peter and Ashlyn in seeking answers from William Bludworth and later attempt to warn others of impending danger.
I was one of the lucky ones.
I cheated death.
I was supposed to be on that ship when it sank, but I got off just in time.
Along with six other students.
We were all together and we survived.
But death doesn't like to be cheated.
It came after us.
For months, we tried to figure out what was going on and how to stop it.
We searched everywhere for answers.
Until finally, we found them.
And once we did, there was no turning back.
"Come on, hurry up!"
I yelled at my sister as I grabbed my backpack and ran down the stairs.
"I'm coming, I'm coming," she yelled back as she put her last book in her bag and closed the locker door.
We ran out of the school alongside our friends: Martin, Ashlyn's boyfriend; Terry; Cleo; Billy; and Martina, all students of our year.
We were all heading to the harbor, where a big ship was waiting to take us on a weekend trip.
It was modern times, so we all had our smartphones with us, which were fully charged.
We reached the harbor in twenty minutes and saw the huge ship in front of us.
"Wow," Martin said as he looked up at the ship in awe.
"It's huge."
"Yeah," Terry said as he nodded his head.
"I've never seen a ship like this before."
We boarded the ship and went to our rooms.
We followed Ashley to the grand staircase, and our footsteps echoed on the polished wood.
She held her phone up, recording the ornate railings and crystal chandelier that hung above us.
The rest of the group clustered behind us, admiring the view.
The staircase curved upward, its mahogany steps gleaming under the artificial lights.
A crew member in a crisp uniform passed by, nodding politely as he went about his duties.
Martin leaned against the railing, grinning at us.
"This is amazing," he said.
"It feels like we're in a movie or something."
Just then, the ship's horn blared loudly, making us all jump.
Ashley nearly dropped her phone, but she managed to catch it just in time.
The sound seemed to reverberate through the entire vessel, causing the floor to vibrate beneath our feet.
I felt a chill run down my spine as I looked around nervously.
"What was that?"
Cleo asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"Just the ship's horn," Billy replied calmly.
"It's probably just signaling our departure."
I sit at my desk, doing homework and staring at the clock.
It's almost midnight.
I'm home alone since my parents are out of town for the weekend.
Suddenly, I see something slide across the floor and come to a stop in front of me.
It's a white envelope.
Strange, since I'm the only one here.
I rush over to the door and fling it open, but there's no one in the hallway.
The envelope feels thick, expensive.
I open it and pull out a glossy cruise line brochure and a golden ticket for a luxury suite aboard the Paradise Queen.
My hands shake as I read the departure date: exactly one month from today.
I check the hallway again, then call Ashlyn's cell.
No answer.
The ticket glowed ominously in the dim light, a silent promise of what was to come.
