"Hey, I’m sorry about that. I didn’t mean to scare you," the handsome stranger says.
He’s smiling, and his eyes are crinkling in the corners.
He has a dimple in both cheeks and beautiful blue eyes.
I can also tell, even with the flash of light from the fireworks, he has great abs underneath his shirt.
I’m able to see this because he’s standing right in front of me, so close that I’m having trouble catching my breath.
I’m not sure if it’s because I’m scared or because he’s really hot.
I don't normally go for the whole ‘smoking hot’ type, but I'm a sucker for a guy with great eyes and a smile that could knock a girl off her feet.
I also don't do military either; it's just something I told myself I could never do.
My exboyfriend cheated on me, and now I'm not allowing myself to get involved with anyone.
This guy seems off limits as well.
"Who are you?"
I ask, still trying to catch my breath.
The cheating thing with my exboyfriend happened a few months ago, and it has completely changed me as a person.
I used to be carefree and open, but now I'm cautious when it comes to men.
"I'm Carter. And you are?"
I take a step back, trying to put some distance between us.
"I'm Violet," I say, trying to sound casual.
He smiles at me, and his smile gets even wider.
He leans in a little closer, lowering his voice.
"Nice to meet you, Darling."
I don't know what to say to that.
I'm not sure if he's flirting with me or if it's just his personality.
I'm about to ask him what he means when Lily appears beside me.
She looks at me and then at Carter, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
"Violet, there you are! I've been looking for you," she says, nudging me playfully.
She looks at Carter with curiosity.
"Aren't you going to introduce me?"
I hesitate for a second before answering her.
"This is Carter," I say, gesturing towards him.
Carter extends his hand to Lily with a friendly grin.
"Pleasure to meet you," he says warmly. Lily raises an eyebrow at me, clearly intrigued by our interaction.
The rest of the evening, Carter stays close to me and Lily.
We chat about light things like our jobs and families, and Carter tells us some funny stories about his time in the military.
I'm surprised by how much I enjoy talking to him; he's easygoing and has a great sense of humor.
As the party winds down, Carter asks if he can walk me home.
"Sure, but only if you promise not to scare me again," I reply with a teasing smile.
"I promise," he says, holding up his hands in mock surrender.
Lily winks at me and whispers, "I think he might be worth breaking a few rules for."
I roll my eyes at her and turn to Carter.
"Let's go then," I say, gesturing towards the door.
We stroll through the quiet streets, the only sound being the crunch of gravel beneath our feet.
The moon is full overhead, casting a silver glow over everything.
Carter walks beside me, his presence both comforting and electrifying.
I can't help but steal glances at him, taking in the way his eyes sparkle in the moonlight.
We talk about everything and nothing, our conversation flowing easily.
He tells me about his favorite movies and his childhood growing up on a farm.
I share with him my love of baking and my dream of one day owning my own bakery.
As we approach my house, I feel a sudden jolt of electricity run through me.
Carter's hand brushes against mine, sending a shiver down my spine.
I glance at him, wondering if he felt it too.
He's looking at me with a small smile on his face, and I can't help but smile back.
The air between us seems to crackle with tension as we stand there, neither of us saying anything. Finally, Carter breaks the silence.
"Well, I guess this is your stop," he says, nodding towards my front door.
I nod, feeling a little disappointed that the night is coming to an end.
"Thanks for walking me home," I say, trying to keep my voice steady.
"It was no problem," he replies, his voice low and husky.
There's a moment of silence between us, and for a second I think he might lean in to kiss me.
But then he steps back, giving me a small wave before turning and walking away.
I watch him go, feeling a mix of relief and disappointment wash over me.
As I unlock my front door and step inside, I can't shake the feeling that something just shifted between us. Violet
It's been two days since Carter walked me home from Lily's party, and I haven't seen or heard from him since then.
I'm not sure why I'm surprised; after all, it was just a friendly walk home from a party where we had both been drinking.
But there was something about that night that felt different to me - like there was a connection between us that went beyond just friendship.
Maybe it was the way he looked at me with those piercing blue eyes of his, or maybe it was the way he made me laugh like no one else ever has before.
I can't stop thinking about him, and it's driving me crazy.
Just as I'm about to give up hope, my phone buzzes with a message.
"Hey Violet, it's Carter. Can we meet up? There's something important I need to tell you."
