I was still pondering over the case in my hand.
Suddenly, I heard a knock at my door.
I looked up and saw that it was a priest.
He looked kind and empathetic.
"Can I help you?" I asked.
"Are you Detective Saffi Redy?"
The priest asked, looking at me.
"Yes, how can I help you?"
I asked again.
"May I come in?" he asked further.
I nodded and allowed him to come in.
"I am Priest John, a friend of Father Michael," he said as he sat down.
"What brings you here?"
I asked him again.
"I came to preach to you," he said.
"To preach?"
I asked again; I was skeptical.
"Yes," he said.
"Is anything wrong?"
I asked him again.
"You seem to be confused," he said as he looked at me.
"I am fine, thank you for your concern," I said with a smile on my lips.
"Really?"
He asked with a raised eyebrow.
Dark Priest
I leaned back in my chair and looked at him.
He had a gentle expression on his face.
"Would you like to hear a prayer?" he asked.
"Prayer?"
"Yes, it can help you relax," he said.
I was not a religious person, but for some reason, I felt comfortable with this man.
I nodded my head in agreement.
He smiled and pulled out a small prayer book from his pocket.
He placed it on the table in front of me and opened it.
The book was old and worn out.
Dark Priest
The leather binding was cracked and faded, but the pages were still intact.
The afternoon sunlight streaming through the window highlighted the intricate symbols etched into the pages.
I noticed that the symbols were not the typical Christian imagery I was familiar with.
"These symbols," I said, pointing at the pages, "they're not what I expected in a prayer book."
Father John leaned forward, his voice dropping to a whisper. "That's because they're not just prayers; they're part of an ancient code linked to Father Michael's disappearance."
Dark Priest
My heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean 'linked'? Are you saying Father Michael didn't just vanish on his own?"
I leaned closer to examine the symbols.
They were a mix of letters and geometric shapes, arranged in a pattern that seemed to shift before my eyes.
My detective instincts were on high alert.
"Can you explain more about this code?"
Father John nodded.
"Yes, it's an ancient language, used by a secret society within the church. It's said that this code holds the key to unlocking hidden truths."
Suddenly, the lights in my office flickered.
I looked up, wondering if it was just a power surge or something more unusual.
The lights continued to flicker, casting eerie shadows on the walls.
I turned my attention back to Father John.
Dark Priest
"Father John, what's going on with the lights?"
He smiled reassuringly.
"It's just a minor issue. Let's focus on the code."
I returned my gaze to the prayer book.
As I studied the symbols, I noticed something strange.
They seemed to be moving on the page, as if they were alive.
I rubbed my eyes, thinking it was just a trick of the light, but when I looked again, they were still shifting and twisting before my eyes. "Father John," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, "the symbols... they're moving."
He leaned closer, his eyes locked on mine.
"Yes, they are. The code is revealing its secrets."
I felt a chill run down my spine as I watched the symbols writhe and twist on the page.
It was as if they were trying to convey a message that only I could decipher.
Suddenly, Father John's voice seemed distant and hollow.
I looked up at him, and his smile had transformed into something sinister.
His eyes glowed with an unnatural red light.
"Father John," I whispered, my heart pounding in my chest.
Dark Priest
"What's happening?"
He placed his hand over mine, preventing me from releasing the prayer book.
"You have been chosen," he said in a voice that was no longer his own.
