My heart raced as I watched my best friend and my girlfriend deceive me.
They had no idea I was watching them.
I had been suspicious of them all week.
Nicolette had been acting strange, and she kept putting me off whenever I asked her about it.
I knew something was wrong, so I decided to follow her.
I watched as they held each other and kissed.
My heart sank.
Had Nicolette been cheating on me with my best friend?
They talked for a bit before hugging again.
I noticed that they looked conflicted.
Maybe they didn't want to hurt me?
Nicolette turned around and walked away from Dante.
He watched her leave before turning and walking away, too.
I watched as they went in different directions.
I decided to follow Nicolette.
She walked into a building a few blocks away.
I followed her and found her in a room filled with newspapers and files.
I looked around and noticed that they were all about Dante and Nicolette.
What was going on?
Why did my girlfriend have a whole room full of stuff about my best friend?
Suddenly, an idea popped into my head.
It couldn't be!
But it had to be!
I was betrayed by the two people I trusted the most in this world.
They were superheroes!
Damn the Heroes
I followed a group of reporters into the building and into the conference room.
I kept my head down and pretended to check my phone so they wouldn't notice me.
At the front of the room, an older woman stood at a podium.
She was dressed in a professional suit and had her hair pulled back into a bun.
Nicolette and Dante sat behind her, still in their hero costumes but unmasked.
I felt like I was going to throw up.
Ms. Chen looked out over the crowd of reporters, smiling brightly.
"Thank you all for coming today. I know many of you have been trying to get an exclusive interview with our heroes for months, and today I'm happy to say that we have arranged for them to meet with several members of the press."
Nicolette fidgeted with her mask, looking uncomfortable.
Dante leaned back in his chair and smiled at the reporters.
Damn the Heroes
Ms. Chen continued, "The heroes will be doing a few events this weekend as well. There will be a parade tomorrow morning in honor of them, followed by a ceremony where they will receive their official superhero licenses. Sunday is our big event—our superheroes will be participating in the annual Hollywood Beach Festival, where they will sign autographs and take pictures with fans."
Some of the reporters murmured excitedly at this announcement.
One of them called out a question.
"Ms. Chen, are you planning on revealing your heroes' secret identities any time soon?"
Ms. Chen smiled again.
"For now, we are happy to have them as mysterious figures who bring hope to our city. We don't see any reason to change that." She looked out at the crowd of reporters, smiling again.
"Thank you all for coming! Now, it's time for questions. I would ask that each reporter only ask one question so everyone has a chance to ask something."
I watched as Nicolette shifted uncomfortably in her seat again.
She looked at Dante and then back down at her hands.
I felt a pang of guilt for following her here—maybe I should have just asked her about it directly instead of snooping around behind her back.
Damn the Heroes
Ms. Chen pointed to a reporter from CNN and called on him to ask his question.
He stood up and began talking about how he was glad that these heroes were bringing hope to America's youth again like they used to back in the forties and fifties.
Then he asked his question: "Do you think your new Hollywood romance will help or hurt your careers as superheroes?"
