My world was turned upside down in a matter of seconds.
I wasn’t sure if the room was spinning or my head was.
Either way, my stomach churned and my heart raced.
I thought I saw something earlier, but I convinced myself it was just my imagination.
Now I wasn’t so sure.
The woman I loved, my girlfriend, was secretly kissing my best friend … the superhero, Dante Cole.
What made it even more painful was that they were both superheroes.
In a world where it wasn’t uncommon to see people flying around, I never thought the people I loved would betray me in such a way.
Nicolette Hayes and I have been together for almost two years.
We kept our relationship quiet, as some people weren’t fond of same-sex couples.
However, everyone who knew us knew we were meant for each other.
We complemented each other in every way.
She was beautiful with long blonde hair and blue eyes.
I was average with short brown hair and green eyes.
I’d do anything for her, and I believed she’d do the same for me.
That’s why her actions hurt so much.
I thought our relationship was solid.
Was I wrong to believe that?
"Lane."
Nicolette waved her hand in front of my face, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Are you OK?"
I stared at her, unsure of what to say.
I stood there frozen as people pushed past me, their excited chatter fading into white noise.
Nicolette’s concerned expression only made the pain worse.
My throat tightened, and I tried to form words, but they were stuck.
All I could see was her fingers tangled in Dante’s dark hair, his hands on her waist, both still in their hero costumes.
The same costumes they wore when they saved the city countless times.
Bile rose in my throat at the thought of how many nights they spent together "patrolling."
When Nicolette reached for my hand, I jerked it away.
My voice came out barely audible, cracking with emotion.
"I saw you."
Nicolette’s eyes widened, and she took a step back.
"Taylor, I—"
I held up my hand to stop her from speaking.
I didn’t want to hear her excuses or explanations.
The crowd surged forward, excited for the heroes’ kiss.
I stumbled away, pushing through the mass of people.
My vision blurred as I made my way to the alley behind the main square.
The crowd was too thick to see their faces, but I could still hear their cheers.
The alley was quiet except for the distant roar of voices from the main square.
I slumped against the cold brick wall and buried my face in my hands.
"Lane?"
Nicolette’s voice called out from the end of the alleyway, but I couldn’t bear to look at her.
A shadow fell across the alley entrance, blocking out the fading sunlight.
I looked up expecting to see Dante or Nicolette, but instead saw a tall figure in a dark suit with a black mask over their face.
Their eyes were hidden by the setting sun behind them, so I couldn’t make out their color.
"That was quite a show," they said, their voice sounding metallic, like it came from a synthesizer rather than their mouth.
"How would you like to even the playing field?"
