MidReal Story

Cuddles with My Hot Roommate

Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything. It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door. Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed. "Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

I hated Tina.
No, that wasn’t enough.
I loathed Tina.
Detested her.
Abhorred her.
Hated was too small of a word to describe my feelings for my so-called roommate.
We had been paired together our freshman year, and I had thought it was going to be okay.
I mean, she was nice, a little pushy and aggressive, but I figured we could find common ground.
We were both girls, both attending college.
We should have been able to find something in common, but we hadn’t.
Tina was a peacemaker, not that she would ever want to make peace with me, but she tended to smooth things over with other people.
She wanted to be liked and loved by everyone, except for me.
I was a warrior.

I had no idea why she hated me so much.
I had never done anything to her, but she had always been a little aggressive and snarky with me.
She would say things that were meant to hurt my feelings, and she would do things that were meant to make me angry.
She was a little bit of a bully, and I didn’t like it.
I didn’t like her.
I didn’t want to like her.
But as I looked at her standing in the doorway, pillow in hand, looking vulnerable and scared, I couldn’t help but feel a little bit of my anger dissipate.
I stared at her for a long time, trying to decide what to do.
I could tell her no, tell her that she needed to go back to her own bed and leave me alone.
Or I could let her sleep here tonight, just this once.

It wasn’t like it was going to be a regular thing or anything. I scooted over in my bed and lifted the blanket up.
Tina walked over and crawled in beside me.
She was so small that she barely took up any room at all.
The silence between us was awkward, but neither of us said anything.
We just lay there quietly, waiting for the other person to fall asleep.
I had been lying awake for hours before Tina had knocked on the door, so I knew it would take me a while to fall asleep now that I had been disturbed.
I thought about getting up and reading a book or something, but then I remembered the half-empty bottle of wine in my desk drawer.
Neil had given it to me last week when he came over for dinner, and I hadn’t gotten around to drinking it yet.
I threw back the covers and got out of bed, walking over to my desk and pulling open the drawer. The bottle was right on top, so I grabbed it and walked back over to the bed.
Tina was still lying there quietly, pretending that she wasn’t watching me as I walked over to the bed with the bottle of wine in my hands.
I sat down on the edge of the bed next to her and pulled off the cork before taking a small sip of the liquid inside.
It was cheap red wine, not very good at all, but it would get the job done if I drank enough of it.
After taking another sip of the wine, I passed it over to Tina who took it from my hand without saying anything or looking at me.
"Why did you really come here tonight, Tina?" I asked, breaking the silence.
She hesitated, then whispered, "I overheard Neil talking about you... and me."

Tina, what hue do your undergarments possess?
I looked at her, but she was staring up at the ceiling.
She took another sip of the wine, then passed it back to me.
The bottle was almost empty now, and I could feel the liquid coursing through my veins.
I had never been much of a drinker, so even this little bit of wine was making me feel tipsy.
I leaned back against the wall, holding the empty bottle in my hands as Tina continued to talk.
"I don’t know what Neil sees in you," she said, her words slurring slightly.
"He’s such a nice guy. He doesn’t deserve someone like you."
She rolled over onto her side and looked at me.
I tried to focus on her face, but it was too dark in the room to really see anything.
She was sprawled across my bed, gesturing wildly with her hands as she talked. "You’re so... so... proper. So... perfect. You always act like you have everything together, but you don’t. You’re just like everyone else."

She sat up suddenly and pointed a finger at me.
"You!"
I almost fell over from where I was leaning against the wall.
"You! You always act so perfect. So proper. But I see right through you."
