MidReal Story

Cuddles with My Hot Roommate

Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything. It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door. Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed. "Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

I hated Tina.
No, that wasn’t enough.
I loathed Tina.
Detested her.
Abhorred her.
Hated was just too mild a word for my feelings toward my so-called roommate and friend.
We had been paired together our freshman year, and I had thought it was going to be a good match.
She was outgoing; I was introverted.
I was analytical; she was complex.
But it hadn’t taken long for me to realize that Tina’s personality was a complex mix of traits that added up to one huge pain in the ass.
The first time we’d gone out together, she had ended up sleeping with my date.
The second time, she had gotten us kicked out of the club for starting a fight with a girl who looked at her funny.
And last night…
Last night had been the final straw.

I stared up at the ceiling, my fingers clenched in the bedsheets as I thought about all the fights we’d had, all the insults she’d hurled my way, all the times she’d made me so angry I could barely contain myself.
She stood in the doorway, her pillow clutched to her chest, waiting for me to answer her question.
The silence stretched out between us, uncomfortable and thick.
Finally, I shifted over to the right side of my narrow bed, leaving just enough room for her to slide under the covers.
She did so quickly, her back pressed against my side.
I could feel her uneven breaths on my arm as she lay there.
Neither of us said anything more.
Minutes ticked by.
Her breathing gradually steadied and her body relaxed, no longer tense and tight with anxiety.
My own anger slowly ebbed away. "Thanks," she whispered.

"Mm-hmm," I replied.
"Why do you even put up with me?" she asked, her voice barely audible.
I hesitated, then sighed. "Because you're the only one who knows about Dad."
Her weight shifted on the mattress, and her hair tickled my shoulder.
I caught a whiff of coconut shampoo, the same brand I used.
"Remember when you told me about your dad?" she asked softly.
"How he…"
Her voice cracked.
I nodded, even though I knew she couldn’t see me in the dark.
"My mom called tonight. She’s getting married again. To him."
Her fingers dug into my arm.
"Please," she begged.
"I need you to come home with me for the wedding. I can’t face them alone."

I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her request.
"You know I can't stand him," I replied, my voice low but firm.
"But for you, I'll do it."
